Guardians Of The Galaxy Actor Drops A Bombshell About Thor 4

Ever since the ending of Avengers: Endgame, fans have been wondering what's going to happen between Thor and the Guardians of the Galaxy. Well, wonder no more, folks.

In the final few minutes of Endgame, the culmination of 21 Marvel Studios movies that came before it, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) climbed into the Guardians of the Galaxy's ship and jetted off into space with the band of lovable misfits in their search for Gamora (Zoe Saldana). The group had formed a bond after the Guardians came across the wreckage of the Asgardian ship in space at the start of Avengers: Infinity War, and Thor stuck with members of the crew through both Infinity War and Endgame. By the end of Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you kind of feel like Thor is now part of the Guardians.

Unsurprisingly, in the lead up to Marvel Studios' announcement of the new films for Phase 4 of the MCU, fans were hoping for an "Asgardians of the Galaxy" situation to come about. That announcement never happened, with Marvel saying nothing about a Thor-slash-Guardians crossover — although both a third Guardians film and a fourth Thor flick are in the docket.

But now, one of the members of the Guardians of the Galaxy cast has broken the ranks of silence to make the announcement we've all been waiting for.

Vin Diesel lets the secret slip

Vin Diesel, the voice of Groot, recently spoke to ComicBook.com about the upcoming films Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Thor: Love and Thunder, and just how they're going to be crossing over into one another's worlds.

"I am waiting and excited for my friend James Gunn to knock this next one out of the park," Diesel said, referencing the writer and director of the first two Guardians films. "He took The Suicide Squad so he's about to embark on it. Thor will also, the director [Taika Waititi] talked to me about Thor, [which] will incorporate some of the Guardians of the Galaxy."

Acknowledging that this is the first confirmed mention of the collaboration, Diesel added, "That'll be very interesting, nobody knows, maybe I shouldn't have said anything."

It's worth noting that the Guardians of the Galaxy will probably play very supporting roles in Love and Thunder, which is touted to be the story of how Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) becomes the next — and first female — Thor. With that in mind, don't expect the Guardians crew to be too much at the forefront of the plot. Diesel has also made it clear that not all of the Guardians will be playing a role in the film, but also hasn't shared exactly who has and hasn't made the cut.

Although the news shouldn't be all that surprising considering the way things were left at the end of Avengers: Endgame, it will make for an interesting directing experience for Taika Waititi, who's in charge of bringing Thor: Love and Thunder to life in November 2021. It'll be especially interesting since initial plans may have had to be changed given that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was allegedly supposed to be filmed and released before Thor: Love and Thunder's release date. (More on that in a moment.) The original plan might have seen Thor appearing in the third Guardians film instead of the other way around.

What could have changed the Asgardians of the Galaxy crossover plans

In July 2019, the Walt Disney Company fired James Gunn as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 over past tweets of his that many deemed offensive and irresponsible. The project remained in limbo while Disney and its subsidiary Marvel Studios attempted to find a replacement director, but things picked up in a positive way when Gunn was ultimately rehired months laterGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was, according to Gunn, originally meant to debut in 2020. However, his firing and subsequent re-hiring delayed the film from 2020 to 2022. Whether or not Thor will later appear in that project following Thor: Love and Thunder has not yet been shared with the public.
