The Punisher Season 2 Headed To Netflix 'Soon'

Frank Castle can still call Netflix home — for now.

On Wednesday, December 12, Netflix released a sizzle reel of the television series and films headed to the streaming platform in January 2019. Included in the teaser-filled video was the first taste of the second season of Marvel's The Punisher, which is "coming soon" to Netflix.

After the clip detailed that A Series of Unfortunate Events, Sex Education, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidtand American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace and movies like Solo: A Star Wars Story and Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation will be available to stream next month, it confirmed, in the last few seconds, that season 2 of The Punisher headed our way in the near future.

Now, just because The Punisher was featured in Netflix's January 2019 announcement reel doesn't necessarily indicate that the sophomore season of the Jon Bernthal-starring superhero series will drop next month. It's pretty odd that the streamer tacked the Punisher footage onto the end of the monthly preview video, sure, but Netflix hasn't revealed a concrete release date for The Punisher season 2. There really is no telling when fans of the show can load it up and binge-watch the new episodes. It could be in a month or two, or it might not be until the last quarter of 2019. Who knows? Not you, and certainly not us!

In light of the unexpected cancellations of Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Daredevil (that one shocked viewers to hell and back), many are remaining skeptical about season 2 of The Punisher and are expecting the upcoming installment to be the series' final one. While the streamer didn't offer any explanation as to why it cut the cord on those three Marvel superhero series, popular speculation is that it did so in order for Disney to scoop up the properties and do something with the characters for its upcoming streaming service Disney+. Additionally, the general attitude amongst Marvel television fans is that The Punisher's days on Netflix are numbered — as are the second remaining Marvel-Netflix show, Jessica Jones — and that the company could pull the plug on the series at any given moment, without warning, just as it did with Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Daredevil

If The Punisher truly does wrap up with season 2, we hope it goes out with a bang. If Netflix cancels the series before its second outing, at least we have fond memories to look back on and violent, visceral, action-heavy episodes to re-watch a million times.
