Marvel's Runaways Season 2 Gets A Powered-Up New Trailer
Marvel's Runaways are coming back to Hulu, and this time, they've got the power.
A full-length trailer for season 2 of the series was released today on Hulu's YouTube channel, and it teases a number of new plot wrinkles — not to mention an abundance of super-powered action.
The first season of Runaways was critically well-received and left Marvel fans hungry for more, and it certainly looks like the second outing won't disappoint. When we last left our young heroes, they'd been forced to go on the run after being framed for the murder of one of their peers — a girl named Destiny, who had in actuality been sacrificed in a dark ritual perpetrated by the PRIDE, a mysterious and arcane group which happens to be comprised of the teens' parents. Throughout the season, the group of youngsters — once close friends, but splintered over the mysterious death of one of their own — slowly came back together as they investigated their parents' ominous activities and the emergence of their own strange powers.
The group consists of Alex (Rhenzy Feliz), who is possessed of near-superhuman intelligence; Karolina (Virginia Gardner) who can manipulate light and energy; Nico (Lyrica Okano), a magic user who focuses her abilities with the Staff of One; Chase (Gregg Sulkin), a science whiz who uses powerful gauntlets he calls "Fistigons"; Molly (Allegra Acosta), who is the youngest and possesses super-strength and durability; and Gert (Ariela Barer), who has a telepathic link with a genetically engineered dinosaur named Old Lace, created by her parents.
The spot opens, appropriately enough, with the kids on the run — with Gert lagging a bit behind, since she's "the one pushing the dinosaur in the shopping cart." We then see the assembled PRIDE, intent on bringing their children ("and the six-and-a-half foot Deinonychus") home.
What follows is action galore, as Nico faces off with her (extremely powerful) mother, Karolina uses her power to make a seemingly unsettling discovery, and the kids resolve to "figure out how to use [their] powers together — as a team" (which it appears they're getting a handle on).
There's also the implication that there may be a mole within the Runaways, as someone appears to have been relaying information about the team to the villainous leader of the PRIDE, Jonah; and a quick introduction to new character Topher (Jan Luis Castellano), who in the comics is a vampire stumbled across by the team during their time on the run.
All in all, it's an exciting spot for what appears to be a kinetic and eventful second season. Season one drew mild criticism in some quarters for taking its sweet time setting up the characters' relationships and building to the climactic confrontation with the PRIDE (which didn't take place until the end of the penultimate episode), but if you ask us, that's a good thing. Season two looks to be putting the pedal to the metal, with more action, more superpowers, more plot twists, and... well, a dinosaur in a shopping cart. We really can't stress this enough.
Binge watchers, take notice: Marvel's Runaways season 2 debuts on Hulu December 21. In the meantime, you can watch that awesome trailer a half-dozen or so more times, and also, check out the sweet new teaser poster below.
