Why Misty Really Didn't Want [SPOILER] To Jump In Yellowjackets S2E7

Contains spoilers for Yellowjackets Season 2, Episode 7 – "Burial"

After their life-saving feast on Jackie's (Ella Purnell) cooked-to-perfection corpse, the stench of death seems to be lingering around the Yellowjackets. Crystal (Nuha Jes Izman) suffers a fatal fall due to Misty's (Samantha Hanratty) threatening involvement, which leaves her shaken during Shauna's (Sophie Nélisse) horror-inspired birth. But in Episode 7, Misty saves Coach Ben (Steven Krueger) from a grisly fate by preventing him from making an irreversible decision, though it could've actually been for her own selfish reasons.

Following the Yellowjackets' savage turn to cannibalism, Coach Ben has been grappling with intense emotional distress. He's so traumatized from what he's witnessed in the wilderness that his starvation is also causing him to hallucinate. He daydreams about an alternate timeline where he never got on the doomed airplane and instead thrives happily with his boyfriend Paul (François Arnaud). However, reality is quickly catching up to the unassumed chaperone, who ends up at the edge of the same cliff Crystal fell from.

Here, Misty finds and coaches Ben down from the edge to prevent any more unnecessary death. She even goes as far as to tell him how the other Yellowjackets will devour his corpse after he dies. While it seems as though she's trying to redeem herself for Shauna's baby's death, she's actually attempting to absolve herself from the intense amount of guilt she feels for Crystal's assisted murder.

Misty saved Coach Ben because of her role in Crystal's death

In Season 2, Episode 5 "Two Truths and a Lie," Misty lets loose a secret she's been dying to tell. She confides in her new best friend Crystal that she destroyed the flight recorder, preventing them from getting rescued. When Crystal learns this, their relationship quickly turns sour (though Misty tries to play it off as a joke). When Misty becomes hysterical and scares Crystal, Crystal takes a misfortunate step over the edge and almost becomes dinner.

Later, when Misty overhears two hungry Yellowjackets talking about the sweet, succulent reward of finding Crystal's body, she takes matters into her own hands. However, in line with Episode 7's heavy title (Burial), she's unable to locate Crystal's corpse because of the abundance of recent snowfall. Misty eventually surrenders to the cold, climbs back up, and finds Ben contemplating suicide. He's sadly lost touch with reality after an imaginative series of meaningful charade games and is unable to cope with the severity of his real-life situation.

As Misty puts the pieces together and realizes what's going on, she desperately pleads with Ben. When that doesn't work, she resorts to threats about revealing his sexuality and even feasting on his body post-mortem. Eventually, Misty breaks down and says she "can't have another death on her hands," claiming it's in reference to Shauna's baby. However, since this occurs at the scene of Crystal's untimely death, it's likely Misty actually still feels terribly guilty about her part in her shocking fall. This ultimately leads Misty to save Ben's life, even if she has to hide her true intentions.
