Here's When You Can Watch Ben Affleck's Air At Home
Today, Nike is arguably the best-known shoe brand across the globe, but this wasn't always the case. In the mid-'80s, the company was lagging behind Adidas and Converse and was considering shutting down the arm of the company that created its now-legendary basketball shoes. Ben Affleck's film, "Air," tells the story of how all of that changed.
In a last-ditch attempt to keep this aspect of the brand alive, Sonny Vaccaro (Matt Damon) decides to court a hot young NBA prospect named Michael Jordan for an endorsement deal. Being that today the Air Jordan brand is one of the most well-known shoes on the market, the rest is, as they say, history.
Still, despite knowing where things were going with this story, viewers showed up for "Air" in fairly solid numbers during its theatrical run. The film has earned nearly $80 million worldwide as of press time, largely accounting for its estimated budget already, and is set to premiere on Amazon's Prime Video service on May 12th, 2023.
Air has held its own in a pretty competitive box office season
Though streaming services like Netflix and Prime Video have been releasing the occasional film to theaters for years now, they rarely perform as well as "Air" has. Generally speaking, streamers have mainly sent their films to theaters in hopes of meeting the criteria for awards shows like The Oscars, and with that in mind, this movie is a huge success for Amazon's streaming platform based on its theatrical earnings alone.
However, Amazon is about to double its value as it makes its premiere at home for the Prime Video subscribers who have been anxiously awaiting it. Considering the popularity of the film, adding "Air" to its streaming catalog is definitely going to be the kind of move that helps to keep those Prime Video subscriptions renewed each month.
Meanwhile, critics have also embraced "Air," with the film garnering an impressive score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. Going off of this evaluation, the film seems to pretty much check all of the boxes for home viewing. Furthermore, being that "Air" is rated R, mainly for foul language, parents can even opt to watch with their kids, provided they're of a certain age, when the film drops on Prime Video on May 12th.
