What Is Power Rangers: Cosmic Fury Based On?

It's no secret to fans that footage from the "Power Rangers" franchise is taken from its Japanese counterpart "Super Sentai." This dates back to 1993's original "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" series, which lifted fight and monster footage from several different "Super Sentai" shows to fill out the footage shot of the American actors out of costume. With "Power Rangers: Cosmic Fury" on the horizon, fans are wondering if the tradition will continue in the upcoming season.

"Cosmic Fury" will indeed be based on "Uchu Sentai Kyuranger," the 2017-2018 season of "Super Sentai." That season was the 41st in the Toei legendary original series. Not only will "Cosmic Fury" be based on that season of "Sentai," but it will also serve as a sequel to the 2021-2022 season, "Power Rangers: Dino Fury. The season will run 10 episodes, dropping on Netflix later this year. Netflix previously aired Season 2 of "Dino Fury," while Season 1 premiered on Nickelodeon.

Cosmic Fury will feature the return of beloved villain Lord Zedd

"Power Rangers: Cosmic Fury" will be adapted from the Japanese series, "Uchu Sentai Kyuranger." That original series takes place when Earth, as well as planets all across the cosmos, have been taken over and run by the Jack Matter organization. A Rebellion brings together nine alien and humanoid fighters from Greece by the power of Kyutama, magical stones guided by the power of the constellations, to level up to be the Kyurangers. The team tries to bring Earth its freedom. In order to face their seemingly impossible task, the nine members of the team added three more members, leading to the largest "Sentai" team in the show's history.

"Cosmic Fury" will follow "Power Rangers: Dino Fury," with the Rangers from that show returning for the 2023 iteration. Near the end of "Dino Fury," franchise villain Lord Zedd, who first appeared in 1994 during "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers," was set free and is lined up to be the big bad for the "Cosmic" season. Footage of the Rangers will be all new and feature completely original suit designs, but footage of Zedd, his lackeys, and the Zords will be from "Uchu Sentai Kyuranger." "Power Rangers: Cosmic Fury" comes to Netflix later in 2023.
