Robin Hood Teaser Trailer: Taron Egerton Becomes A Hooded Vigilante

You've never seen Robin Hood quite like this before.

Lionsgate has unveiled the first teaser trailer for Robin Hood, the impending action-adventure film that tells the tale of its titular heroic outlaw from a refreshing, revisionist perspective.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle star Taron Egerton leads the pic, which was originally titled Robin Hood: Origins, and is joined by Jamie Foxx as Little John, Robin's best friend and the leader of the band of banditos known as the Merry Men. 50 Shades franchise actor Jamie Dornan takes on the role of Will Scarlet, who queries in the first few seconds of the trailer, "You're not curious who's under the hood?"

The footage reveals Egerton's Robin not as the public enemy who steals from the rich so he can give to the poor, but rather as a badass version of the Arthurian vigilante who can flip through the air, fire arrows at his adversaries, be both a Crusader and a warrior, and inspire commoners to look up and see hope. Essentially, Robin Hood answers the question, "What if the famous archer was actually a superhero?" as it gives us a taste of Robin's alter-ego Robin of Loxley, the enemies who are after him, and the antagonist he'll have to take down to get what he wants: the Sheriff of Nottingham, played by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Ready Player One actor Ben Mendelsohn.

Peaky Blinders creative Otto Bathurst takes the reins to direct Robin Hood from a screenplay written by Ben Chandler and David James Kelly. Bathurst previously opened up to Entertainment Weekly about the film's story, which Chandler crafted. The director explained, "You don't become a legend for 800 years if you've just stolen a few bags of money from rich people to give to the poor. In my mind, Robin Hood was this sort of seriously militarized anarchist revolutionary, a freedom thinker and a truth seeker. And the more I got into the story, it just became startling how utterly relevant it is to what's going on in society now."

Actor Foxx added, "The way they shot it was crazy, it looks like you're watching Zero Dark Thirty. We're shooting with our bows, but they computer-generated it so it's rapid-fire, almost like an AK. I saw that and was like, 'Oh, they ain't ready for this.'"

Here's the official synopsis for the film: "Robin of Loxley (Taron Egerton), a war-hardened Crusader, and his Moorish commander (Jamie Foxx) mount an audacious revolt against the corrupt English crown in a thrilling action-adventure packed with gritty battlefield exploits, mind-blowing fight choreography, and a timeless romance."

Topping off the cast of Robin Hood are Eve Hewson as Maid Marian, Tim Minchin as Friar Tuck, Paul Anderson as Guy of Gisborne, and Josh Herdman as Righteous.

The film is due out on November 21.
