What Is The Song In Guardians Of The Galaxy 3's Super Bowl Trailer?

Nobody uses music in their movies in quite the same way that James Gunn does. The original trailer for the original "Guardians of the Galaxy" film back in 2014 famously featured the Blue Suede version of "Hooked on a Feeling" from 1974. According to a 2014 interview with Gunn in Vulture, Gunn originally made a playlist of 120 songs for the first "Guardians" film and whittled it down from there, often finding songs he wanted to write entire scenes around. The soundtrack to the movie became one of the most iconic parts of the film, and it wasn't something that was taken from the original comics. Gunn's "The Suicide Squad" similarly had a really fun, rockin' soundtrack, and its spin-off series "Peacemaker" revolved around jock rock classics. Even "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special" featured some of the greatest Christmas songs in rock history.

In a 2022 interview that Gunn did with Entertainment Weekly, he said, "I worked twice as hard on this soundtrack as I did on both the first two soundtracks combined," promising that music will be a big part of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3." Well, the new trailer for the "Guardians" threequel just dropped, and once again Gunn picked a knock-out of a song.

The song in the trailer is Since You Been Gone by Rainbow

The song playing in the new "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" trailer that dropped during the Super Bowl is called "Since You Been Gone." It was released by a band called Rainbow in 1979. Rainbow didn't originate the song, though, as according to Who Sampled, their version was a cover by an artist named Russ Ballard.

In a 2021 interview with Defenders of the Faith, Ballard admitted that Rainbow did the song the way he should have, with his original version being less rock and more pop. According to an interview with Graham Bonnet of Rainbow in Rockpages.gr, the band was reluctant to cover the song, but management wanted them to put out something more commercial, and the cover made Rainbow a much bigger name. So, in the end, the cover was a huge hit for the band and fits perfectly in the "Guardians" trailer.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" is slated for release on May 5th. The film will be James Gunn's final Marvel film, as the writer-director now helms the newly christened DCU.
