Emily Blunt And John Krasinski Are Happy They Weren't Cast In The MCU
Emily Blunt and John Krasinski would have walked along completely different career paths had they been cast in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the actors hold no ill feelings over not getting to suit up in the on-screen superhero world. In fact, the two are happy about it.
Speaking with Yahoo! Movies UK to promote their newest film, the sure-to-be-smash-hit A Quiet Place, real-life couple Emily Blunt and John Krasinski got candid about their past connections to the MCU. Way back when, Blunt auditioned to play Black Widow, and Krasinski was gunning for the role of Captain America. While the parts ended up going to Scarlett Johansson and Chris Evans, respectively, Blunt and Krasinski don't sit up at night wishing they had gotten them instead.
"I don't think I would have been able to do a lot of projects that I've loved doing," Blunt said, adding that, with the gift of hindsight, she's relieved Marvel didn't chose her to become Black Widow.
The actress would have been tied to a multi-movie contract had she gotten involved in the MCU, and the fact that she isn't, that she has freedom to climb aboard any project her heart desires, offers her a ton of comfort and a sense of fulfillment. "I think that was a nerve-wracking prospect for me to not be able to choose, and the choices I have are often all I have, so you can't really plan for anything else," explained Blunt. "You can't predict what's going to happen, what's going to catch fire and what's not, so if I make the choice for me, and not because I'm contracted, I think that's an exciting prospect."
For Krasinski's part, he feels much the same. "That's really interesting. I think A Quiet Place definitely wouldn't exist [if I had been cast in the MCU]," the actor said. "There are benefits, and Chris Evans seems to be having a wonderful time. I love Chris, I've been a friend of his for a while. Those movies are so much fun and I love watching them. I tell him I'm first in line to see his new movies."
Krasinski added that he takes a relaxed approach to life, letting it take him where it may, but he admitted that he hasn't ever thought about how different his world would be if he was cast as Captain America. "I never would have been here if I had gotten Captain America. I never thought about that, you just broke my brain," he said with a laugh.
By all accounts, Blunt and Krasinski aren't missing out on the MCU — what with A Quiet Place already receiving rave reviews and the two scoring respective gigs in Disney's The Jungle Cruise and on Amazon's Jack Ryan — and the MCU ended up doing more than fine with the versions of Black Widow and Captain America it ran with. Ah, don't you just love a happy ending?
