Bad Sisters Season 2 - What We Know So Far

Since its launch in November 2019, Apple TV+ has released a wide range of original programming that combines cinematic production quality with insightful storytelling. When it comes to the streamer's comedies, it boasts two consecutive Primetime Emmy Awards for outstanding comedy series in 2021 and 2022 for "Ted Lasso." In a similar fashion to that U.K.-set show, the network's "Bad Sisters" takes place in nearby Dublin, Ireland, and takes a biting, darkly humorous look at a family of sisters who become embroiled in a police investigation surrounding their recently departed brother-in-law. The series is part thriller and part intriguing family satire with lots of twists and turns along the way.

Season 1 of the program presented an entirely self-contained story that wrapped up its myriad narratives by the finale. Therefore, it is welcome and surprising news for fans of the series that theĀ announcement of a 2nd season of the black comedy hasĀ officially been greenlit by Apple TV+. Here is everything we know so far about the next installment, including when we can expect its premiere, its plot, and much more.

When will Bad Sisters Season 2 be released?

In a statement released to accompany the news of the program's Season 2 renewal (via The Hollywood Reporter), showrunner Sharon Horgan, who also plays Eva Garvey in the series, shared, "If you'd have told me three years ago that I'd be making a series about five murderous sisters chasing a man around Ireland trying to kill him I'd have said; yeah, that sounds about right. The response to our show had been beyond what we could have hoped for. It gave us the opportunity to shine a light on stories that don't always get such a global platform. I look forward to getting chilly in the Irish Sea one more time."

The first season of Apple TV+'s "Bad Sisters" premiered on August 19, 2022, and wrapped in late October. The story unfolded across 10 episodes in a limited series-style format. With another season having been announced, it could be quite some time before it premieres due to pre-production, principal photography, and post-production. No timeframe concerning the release of the new installment was shared, but we will keep you updated when more information is released.

What is the plot of Season 2 of Bad Sisters?

Season 1 of "Bad Sisters" was filled with many memorable moments as audiences were introduced to the five Garvey sisters living in a seaside town in Dublin, Ireland. Eva Garvey (Sharon Horgan), Grace Williams (Anne Marie-Duff), Ursula Flynn (Eva Birthistle), Bibi Garvey (Sarah Greene), and Becka Garvey (Eve Hewson) were all united by the investigation into John Paul's (Claes Bang) mysterious death, as initiated by insurance agent Thomas Claffin (Brian Gleeson), with the assistance of his brother Matthew (Daryl McCormack), who also happens to be dating Becka without knowing she is part of the probe. The mystery is framed with flashbacks interspersed throughout the season that give us disturbing insights into John Paul's cruel and vindictive streak.

As for what viewers can expect in the upcoming installment, it is truly a mystery since the first installment of the show was based on a Flemish limited series called "Clan" from the early 2010s. In an interview with Decider, Horgan was asked if she would consider a follow-up and she replied, "Well, it's a really tricky thing. Because like you said, that's the story. It began as a limited series, and that's how I approached it. But everyone keeps telling me how much they love it, including our overlords..." The showrunner then added, "So I don't know. I guess if a really great idea came along. At the same time, I'm really satisfied, really satisfied, with the way it turned out."

Who is starring in the 2nd season of Bad Sisters?

Since there are so few details available on what Season 2 of the show might cover or what direction it will go in, audiences can only assume that the cast of the 1st outing will return. In addition to the Garvey sisters, we could possibly see the return of Thomas and Matthew Claffin, since the ending of the 1st season alerted us to a loose end concerning Matthew's suspicion of John Paul and Grace's neighbor Rodger's (Michael Smiley) possible assistance in helping Grace conceal her husband's body after killing him.

The show was also filled out with numerous recurring characters. Saise Quinn, who played John Paul and Grace's daughter Blanaid, told Hello Magazine when asked if she would return for another season, "Yeah, I think so! My relationship with Grace can definitely develop further." Most of the secondary roles in the series revolve around the Garveys or the Claffins, and with the latter looking into the disappearance of John Paul likely to continue into the future, it is not too far off the mark to expect most of the cast to return for a second round.

Who is the showrunner for Bad Sisters Season 2?

The primary showrunner for "Bad Sisters" is the actress playing Eva, the eldest Garvey sister, Sharon Horgan. Before creating the empowering show about sisterhood it has since become, the actress/writer was a co-creator, star, and writer for Amazon Prime Video's "Catastrophe," which ran from 2015 to 2019, as well as BBC Three's "Pulling" in the mid-to-late 2000s. Both series were similar in tone and structure to "Bad Sisters," which goes to show her indelible knack for dark humor, insightful exchanges about life and relationships, in addition to intriguing narrative threads that often go into unexpected territory the viewer did not see coming.

Horgan co-developed the adaptation of "Clan" with Dave Finkel and Brett Baer, both of whom worked on "30 Rock" and "New Girl" for NBC and Fox respectively. When asked by The A.V. Club if she would consider doing a Season 2 of "Bad Sisters," the showrunner stated, "It's not like we didn't think about it even as we filmed season one. But it's based on a limited series and has a lovely, satisfying end. However, people have responded to the show and the characters. So if I came up with a really great idea, maybe? But it would have to be really great." Horgan seems to have found that special idea to share with fans once again.

What will the 2nd season of Bad Sisters be rated?

Season 1 of "Bad Sisters" was rated TV-MA by Apple TV+, which stands for "mature audiences only." There is a strong possibility that Season 2 will feature the same rating, and parents should be strongly cautioned before allowing those under the age of 17 to watch this show unaccompanied. According to Common Sense Media, the program primarily features an array of mature themes and depictions of violence that warrant the highest content advisory rating used for a television series. Strong language, frequent alcohol consumption, and intermittent tobacco smoking also feature in the first 10 episodes.

One of the most disturbing aspects of the 1st season was the frank discussion Eva has with her sisters in the finale episode by revealing that John Paul brutally sexually assaulted her years earlier and then lied about it to twist the blame onto her. Despite being a dark comedy, the program is not afraid to go to challenging and emotional places with its audiences, so viewers should be prepared for the possibility of more mature storytelling in the next installment of the series.
