Deadliest Catch's Sig Hansen's Wife Found His Celebrity Status Strange At First
Longtime "Deadliest Catch" star Sig Hansen has made it clear that he has a complex relationship with the fame he's earned from the show. Indeed, when the camera crew first came aboard Hansen's F/V Northwestern, he was so paranoid about being recorded that he actually tossed all of the cameras into the ocean.
Although Hansen eventually came to accept the 24/7 surveillance across his boat, he's also expressed his distaste for the way that he is portrayed on "Deadliest Catch," claiming that the show makes him seem more sadistic and cruel than he actually is. And yet, the immense success of "Deadliest Catch" has also made Captain Sig Hansen an international celebrity. In a 2014 interview with Channel Guide Magazine, Hansen admitted that the series has absolutely changed his life, providing a massive financial boon for the fishing industry and helping Hansen himself overcome his fear of public speaking.
It's clear that the immense success of "Deadliest Catch" has been both a blessing and a curse for Sig Hansen and his family. Indeed, even his wife June found the adjustment to her husband's newfound stardom to be extremely odd.
June Hansen found her husband's fame to be off-putting early on
In the TV Documentary "Luckiest Catch," which focuses primarily on the story of the F/V Northwestern and brothers Sig and Edgar Hansen, Sig's wife June Hansen admitted that she found Sig's celebrity status to be extremely strange once "Deadliest Catch" really took off.
"It's pretty strange and it's kind of hard once in a while," June explained. "Not the first couple of years, but now it's so popular ... even if we go to the store I kind of figure a little bit [of] extra time before we get there until we get home again. Because he's really nice, he takes time for everyone." Sig Hansen himself added that he certainly wouldn't be able to deal with the added attention if his wife was the celebrity, recalling how he himself received fan letters and marriage proposals once the show really took off.
In any case, June's later appearances within the series make it clear that both she and Sig Hansen have grown accustomed to their unexpected fame over the years, as has their daughter Mandy, who followed in her father's footsteps and is now a regular cast member on "Deadliest Catch." Although June Hansen may have found Sig's fame to be off-putting at the beginning of the series, it seems like the entire family has grown accustomed to the fame that "Deadliest Catch" brought to the Hansen clan.
