Justice League Will Reveal The 'True' Superman
Contains spoilers for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
Turns out Superman just needed to die in order to become the hero the world needs.
Although Henry Cavill has been absent from the trailers and most of the marketing for Justice League, his character casts a huge shadow over the plot. While Superman met his end at the hands of Doomsday in Batman v Superman, the final shot of that flick hinted that the Man of Steel would return. We've known that Batman (Ben Affleck) is torn up about the loss and that Cavill will be back for Justice League, but it hasn't been clear how that will happen.
However, Cavill told Entertainment Weekly (via ScreenRant) that when Superman does fly back onto the scene, he'll be much better than he was in Man of Steel and Batman v Superman. Cavill said he and DC head Geoff Johns put a lot of thought into making the iconic character more like he's traditionally been depicted.
"Geoff and I have been delving into the history of the character to get to the core of who Superman is," Cavill said. "This is the first time we see the true Superman, the Superman who is confident and sure and full of hope and joy."
This is probably a reaction to the mixed reaction to the darker and conflicted Superman previously seen in the DCEU. But it's also likely another sign of the Wonder Woman effect. The braintrust at DC consciously tried to lighten the bleak tone of the DCEU after the bright and optimistic Wonder Woman became the biggest hit of the summer.
It remains to be seen how much screen time Superman will actually get in Justice League, but we'll find out soon: the Zack Snyder flick lands in theaters on Nov. 17.
