Brad Pitt Agreed To Deadpool 2 Under One Condition
After the game-changing success of "Deadpool," it was only a matter of time before the merc with the mouth returned for round two. "Deadpool 2" premiered in 2018 with the same outrageous violence and tongue-in-cheek humor, this time with a new adversary, Cable, played by Josh Brolin. No stranger to comic book films, Brolin brought the fan-favorite character to life as the time-traveling mutant trying to fix his future. However, Cable wasn't the only new character pulled from the comics to make their on-screen debut.
The weird mutant team X-Force comes to life with characters Domino (Zazie Beetz), Shatterstar (Lewis Tan), and, of course, the unforgettable Peter (Rob Delaney). However, one of the more interesting inclusions is the reveal that the largely unseen team member Vanisher was secretly played by Brad Pitt. Did you miss it? That may not be shocking — no pun intended — as the only time you see him is after being electrocuted by some inconveniently placed telephone wires. Some may think that this would be a thankless role, but Pitt had a way of being paid back for his time.
Coffee was a requirement on set
Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt has lent his name to box office hits such as the "Ocean's Eleven" as well as films in the Quentin Tarantino universe. As such, it seemed unlikely that the minds behind "Deadpool 2" would be lucky enough to entice an actor so universally known for such a minor role. However, according to writer Rhett Reese, it didn't take that much arm twisting. In fact, all Pitt asked for was a cup of coffee.
"He was really specific about the coffee," Reese told CinemaBlend. "[He] said, 'I want this exact coffee from Starbucks, and, Ryan [Reynolds], I want you to deliver it to me." As amusing as it is to imagine Reynolds chauffeuring Starbucks to the seasoned actor, Reynolds's account of the situation doesn't exactly line up with that detail. When prompted about the cameo, Reynolds assured Entertainment Tonight that Pitt's demands weren't that dire.
"I was told all he wants is a cup of coffee," Reynolds said, determined to set the story straight. "And I said, 'like a franchise or just one individual cup of coffee?' And I was told one individual cup of coffee, which was really his way of saying, 'I'm doing it for nothing.'" This was confirmed by Reese, who told CinemaBlend that not only had Pitt forgotten about his coffee request when he arrived on set, he took the lowest wage allowed by his union for his work. However, it all paid off when audiences saw one of the most surprising scenes of the film.
Pitt is no stranger to surprise appearances
Brad Pitt's status as an A-list actor makes him intimidating to many people. Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick weren't confident that they could snatch him up for "Deadpool 2," and they certainly weren't the only filmmakers who were unsure if they could get Pitt to sign on to a project. During filming for the Sandra Bullock comedy "The Lost City," directors Aaron and Adam Nee were also dubious if they could get the Oscar-winning actor to sign on as professional tracker Jack Trainer.
"We were like, 'We're never going to get Brad Pitt to do this,'" Adam Nee told Total Film in an interview. Though Pitt does appear in a substantial part of the film, he plays second fiddle to Loretta (Bullock) and Alan's (Channing Tatum) love story. Luckily for the filmmakers, fate stepped in when Bullock played a role in Pitt's film "Bullet Train." It wasn't long before Pitt's appearance in the movie became less hypothetical. Nee went on to say, "And it then suddenly became real — and we were sitting on a Zoom, and talking to him about the movie. Before we knew it, he was in the jungle."
