Ready Player One Author Breaks Down First Trailer
There are so many easter eggs packed into the first trailer for Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Ready Player One, that it would be nearly impossible to catch them all. But if there's one guy who can do it (other than Spielberg), it's probably Ernest Cline, author of the 2011 novel and co-screenwriter of the movie.
Entertainment Weekly brought Cline in to do a commentary track over the first trailer, and you can try to keep up in the video above.
If this is the first you're hearing about Ready Player One, it's set in 2043, when the only escape from the dystopian world is through the virtual reality of OASIS, which is brimming with references to pop culture of the past, particular that of the '80s. In one shot of the trailer, Cline reveals that you can spot Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings, Harley Quinn, and Deadshot. The rest of the trailer is packed with amazingness, including a scene where Napoleon rides a giant scorpion and shoots Freddy Krueger. It's as awesome as it sounds.
The movie stars Tye Sheridan (X-Men: Apocalypse), Mark Rylance (Dunkirk), Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel), Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One), Simon Pegg (Star Trek, Shaun of the Dead), T.J. Miller (Deadpool, Silicon Valley), Hannah John-Kamen (Killjoys).
Ready Player One arrives in theaters March 30, 2018. While we wait for more, check out more sci-fi movies that will blow everyone away next year.
