Are We Ever Really Getting Now You See Me 3?

2013's heist movie "Now You See Me" was an unexpected hit at the box office. The film centers around a group of skilled illusionists as they plan a complex bank heist. Meanwhile, FBI and Interpol agents are hot on their heels. With a dream cast including Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Mark Ruffalo, and Isla Fisher, not to mention a whip-smart screenplay, the film brought in over $350 million (via Box Office Mojo).

It seemed like a no-brainer that a sequel would conjure its way into theaters. And so the second film, "Now You See Me 2," was released in 2016. This time, Jon Chu stepped into the role of director, bringing high energy mixed with comedy. "Now You See Me 2" sees the gang of thieves getting back together to pull off an even bigger heist for tech mogul Walter Mabry (Daniel Radcliffe).

Though the sequel currently holds a dismal 34% on Rotten Tomatoes, it did extremely well financially, bringing in over $330 million (via Box Office Mojo). Since the last movie came out all the way back in 2016, fans of the series have been wondering, will there ever be another entry? In fact, the latest installment might be coming sooner than you think.

Now You See Me 3 is in development

Back in 2015, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer had announced that "Now You See Me 3" was in the works (via Variety). Over half a decade later, and it seems that fans of the razzle-dazzle heist films are finally getting some updates on the project. In April 2020, Deadline reported that "Now You See Me 3" is indeed still in the works. Though plot details have been kept under wraps, here's what we know so far.

Screenwriter Eric Warren Singer, who co-penned the hotly anticipated "Top Gun: Maverick," has been brought on board to bring plenty of big spectacle and plot twists. In a statement to Deadline, Nathan Kahane, the president of Lionsgate's Motion Picture Group, stated, "Eric has always been fascinated with the fine art of deception and illusion in all of its forms and he came to us with a great story that takes the mythology of Now You See Me and pushes [t]he Four Horsemen to a whole new level with our key returning cast and new characters."

Morgan Freeman, Jesse Eisenberg, Dave Franco, Michael Caine, Mark Ruffalo, and Lizzy Caplan have all been confirmed to return for the threequel. The Oscar-nominated Benedict Cumberbatch will also be joining his Marvel co-star Ruffalo for the latest film. "Now You See Me 3" is reported to be coming sometime in 2022.
