The Binge 2: It's A Wonderful Binge Release Date, Cast And Plot - What We Know So Far

Alternate-future reality films have become more prevalent recently. One of the most notable examples is how popular the horror franchise "The Purge" is. The first of the Blumhouse films premiered in 2013 and posited an alternate world where for one night all crime, including murder, is legal. Hulu's high school comedy from 2020 took the same approach. "The Binge" is almost a direct spoof of "The Purge" but instead of murder, it's drugs and drinking that become legal. In the society of "The Binge," alcohol is completely outlawed except for one night a year. On Binge Night, anyone eighteen years and older is able to partake in an excessive night of reckless drinking and other illegal drugs.

Outlets such as Decider celebrated the casting of "The Binge" — but not much else. The film was less than impressive with 5.2 out of 10 stars on IMDb. However, that didn't stop Hulu from greenlighting a sequel to the high school film. Here is everything we know about "The Binge 2: It's A Wonderful Binge."

When will The Binge 2 be released?

The first film in the series, "The Binge" was a summer release. The comedy premiered in August 2020 on Hulu, when many films were being delayed due to COVID-19. "The Binge" was credited with being a "tight-knit" production as they filmed on location in Syracuse, New York (via Deadline). Although the sequel film is still in development, there are a few details that can be gathered about its release.

"The Binge" fits in with the usual summer release trend of raunchy high school movies. However, judging from the title, a different release date may be in store. The subtitle for "The Binge 2" is "It's A Wonderful Binge." This is a reference to the Jimmy Stewart film "It's a Wonderful Life," which is a Christmas movie. More than likely the film will have a winter release to fit its title. As the film has just gone into production, we can deduce that this release will likely be around Christmas of 2022 or 2023.

Who is in the cast of The Binge 2?

Casting news has yet to be released, but there are quite a few things we can come to expect from "The Binge 2." First and foremost, the film is a comedic high school film, so it can be expected that at least some of the cast members from the first film will return. Vince Vaughn appeared in the Hulu comedy as the uptight authority figure, Principal Carlsen. Vaughn never seems to go out of style and it would be an oversight if he was not somehow included.

The other no-brainer for the sequel is up-and-comer Skyler Gismodo. Gismodo first came onto the scene as nerdy neighbor Eric in "Santa Clarita Diet." He proved his acting and comedy chops in subsequent projects "Booksmart" and HBO's "The Righteous Gemstones." Gismodo played the lead role of Griffin in "The Binge," and he attempted to win the heart of the principal's daughter. Griffin was nothing without his friends Hags (Dexter Darden) and Andrew (Eduardo Franco). The three characters formed a comedic trio that the sequel should bring together for another adventure.

What is the plot of The Binge 2?

While "The Binge 2" is in early stages of development, some plot points have been revealed in a Deadline exclusive. The film's original screenwriter Jordan VanDina is returning for the sequel in a directorial capacity. It has beeb revealed that this time, the film's fictional holiday of The Binge will fall around the holidays. The plot is set to lean into all the trappings of a holiday film including stop-motion animation and songs.

"I am thrilled for my directorial debut to be a Christmas sequel to 'The Binge.' Working with the tight-knit American High film family in Syracuse, NY has been an honor and a privilege," VanDina stated via Deadline. Fans of the original film should stay tuned for more details to come. With any luck, the original cast members will return for the holiday extravaganza with more illicit activity than ever before.
