The Dawson's Creek Character You Are Based On Your Zodiac Sign

"The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed." ~ C.G. Jung

One of the fascinating things about astrology is how the traits associated with each sign can manifest differently depending on who we spend our time with. Each friendship and relationship brings out different facets of our personality. One friendship might bring out our playful side, while another brings our competitive nature to the surface. One relationship makes us feel empowered by encouraging us to follow our dreams, while another can make us feel insecure.

These lessons are part of the arc of any coming-of-age story. With a series like "Dawson's Creek," running for six seasons between 1998-2003, we see these dynamics played out within a group of friends during their high school years and into college. Now that "Dawson's Creek" is available to stream, we can see how the characters developed throughout the series. Every character in the show embodies a different zodiac sign, and all of them exhibit unique traits depending upon which relationship or friendship they are focused on in the moment. Was there a character in this series you related to? Here's a look at the "Dawson's Creek" character you are based on your zodiac sign.

Aries: Doug Witter (March 20-April 19)

Aries is a cardinal fire sign, symbolized by the Ram, known for its bravery, solar energy, and impatience. Ruled by Mars, the god of war, Aries won't back down from confrontation, confident they are always right. Deputy Doug Witter (played by Dylan Neal) perfectly fits this description. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac and in the Witter family, Doug is the eldest child, embodying the cardinal energy of Aries. Doug follows his father into law enforcement, a common career choice amongst Aries.

Pacey's eldest brother, Doug was a recurring character throughout the series. Fire signs have a lot in common, but Aries is a cardinal sign with the innate drive to lead by influencing those around them. Pacey's sign is mutable, wanting freedom, hinting at an astrological incompatibility at the root of their issues. Pacey and Doug have a lot of conflict in the early seasons, because of family tensions, but by the end of the series, the two fire signs are on good terms. Pacey even starts taking Doug's advice.

In the two-episode series finale, "Dawson's Creek" jumps years into the future, and we learn Doug is gay and dating Jack. Although they seem to complement each other, a conflict over Doug's hesitancy to come out complicates their relationship. Doug is traditional in his views, like many Aries; he believes the community of Capeside will not accept a gay police chief. A romantic connection between an Aries and Taurus is passionate, but often riddled by conflict because of basic astrological incompatibilities.

Taurus: Jack McPhee (April 19-May 20)

Taurus is a fixed earth sign, symbolized by the Bull, and known for being stubborn, reliable, and sensual. It is in Jack's (Kerr Smith) friendship with Jen, and his relationship with his sister Andie, that we see Jack's reliable strength and dedication, traits associated with Taurus. He is a nurturing brother and loyal friend. Being ruled by Venus, Taureans enjoy the finer things in life and are known for overindulging. In college, after joining a fraternity, Jack develops a drinking problem. This creates tension with his "soulmate" and best friend, Jen Lindley. Jack and Jen's signs are each other's polarity sitting across from each other on the wheel of the zodiac. These signs, while very different, complement and complete each other.

In the "Dawson's Creek" finale, Jack has moved back to Capeside, where he's teaching high school and dating Doug Witter. A relationship between an Aries and Taurus is passionate, but defined by conflict. (Horned beasts symbolize both signs — it should be no surprise they might clash.) Taurus and Aries are stubborn, but in completely different ways; Aries is more vocal and confrontational, while Taurus is quietly obstinate. Both signs are emotional, but express their emotions in different ways. Aries and Taurus share similar values, though. We see this when Jack and Doug set aside their conflict after Jen dies, leaving her daughter, Amy, to be raised by Jack. It is with this development that Doug shows up for Jack, finally coming out.

Gemini: Joey Potter (May 20-June 21)

Gemini is a mutable air sign, symbolized by the Twins and known for being indecisive, charming, and intelligent. Joey "I can't make my mind up" Potter (played by Katie Holmes) is charming, witty, beautiful, and dualistic; sometimes sunny and innocent, other times thoughtful and introspective. Joey uses humor as a defense mechanism, a Gemini trait, making racy jokes or statements to divert attention away from her insecurities. As an air sign, Geminis are curious, needing intellectual stimulation to avoid boredom. Geminis see the world in shades of gray, something Joey says when she confronts Dawson about turning her father in to the police.

In Joey's brief relationship with Jack, we see how two signs next to each other on the zodiac can attract despite their differences. Growing up without parents, Joey is drawn to Jack's stable Taurean presence. Gemini can benefit from the structure a Bull can bring to their life. It's unlikely this relationship would last because of their astrological incompatibilities: Taurus is fixed in modality, Gemini is mutable. Taurus is earth, Gemini is air. The two signs couldn't be more different.

The Joey/Dawson/Pacey triangle is the fulcrum for the drama in "Dawson's Creek." Their larger friend group rearranges itself around who is dating whom within this love triangle. Joey's love for Dawson is "childlike and eternally innocent," as Joey tells Pacey in the last episode of the series. This statement emphasizes the childlike quality innate to Geminis, but also the basic incompatibility between Joey's Gemini sun and Dawson's sign. In Joey's connection with Pacey, we see one of the most compatible sign combinations for a Gemini.

Cancer: Bessie Potter (June 21-July 22)

Cancer is a cardinal water sign, symbolized by the Crab. Crabs are the symbolic "mother" of the zodiac. Joey, who emerges as the protagonist of this series, is being raised by her sister Bessie in their parent's absence. Bessie Potter (Nina Repeta) is nurturing and maternal, empathetic, accepting, and guides Joey through the turbulent years of adolescence. This gentle guidance is emblematic of Cancer's cardinal nature and their emphasis on home and family. After the Ice House burns down, Bessie opens the Potter B&B, an excellent occupation for a sign linked to the home.

Leo: Audrey Liddell (July 22-August 22)

Leo is a fixed fire sign, symbolized by the regal Lion. Audrey "I'm gonna be an actress" Liddell (Busy Philipps) loves being the center of attention, just like all Lions. It is obvious from her first appearance, as Joey's roommate in Boston, that Audrey is a fiery Lion. She has a big, bold personality, hailing from California, a state inextricably linked to the sun, Leo's ruling star. Leos are known for their courage and warm personality. Leo and Gemini are a compatible paring, making Joey's and Audrey's friendship natural despite their differences.

Audrey's relationship with Pacey is further evidence of her Leo nature. Fire signs are drawn to each other, sharing an energetic desire to experience everything life has to offer, and a warm regard for each other. Audrey and Pacey's relationship is emblematic of a Leo and Sagittarius paring. Leo wants to be adored, and Sagittarius is happy to adore them. This paring could benefit from some earthy grounding, or water cooling, lest their passionate natures combust into an inferno when they experience conflict — there's plenty to argue about between these two signs. Leo is a fixed sign, wanting to be in charge, and Sagittarius is a mutable sign that values freedom. These two signs, and characters, are a fun and energetic combination, but fun doesn't always last, and this is true of Audrey and Pacey's relationship.

Virgo: Andie McPhee (August 22-September 22)

Virgo is a mutable earth sign, symbolized by the Virgin. Virgos are known for being judgmental perfectionists who are motivated by altruistic desires. Virgos mean well. Their heart is in the right place, even if they seem controlling. Andie "let's make a list" McPhee (Meredith Monroe) is the classic overachieving Virgo, sharing her earth element with her brother Jack. She has high expectations for herself and others, getting early acceptance to Harvard during her senior year at Capeside High. This is evidence of her intellectual capacity and her anchoring in the material world, which are traits tied to Virgo.

Andie and Joey's easy friendship, despite their personality differences, is evidence of their signs. Gemini and Virgo are both ruled by Mercury, giving them an intellectual understanding of each other despite their differences. They also share their mutable modality, making Virgo a little less stubborn than the other earth signs. Andie and Dawson's easy friendship is due to their shared mutability and their signs; Virgos and Pisces are very compatible. We suspect Andie has a Pisces moon, making her more emotionally expressive and erratic than some Virgos.

Andie's relationship with Pacey shows how transformative an earth/fire combination can be. Virgo and Sagittarius share their mutable modality and intellectual curiosity. The attraction is obvious in their quick repartee, a defining characteristic of Andie and Pacey's relationship. An earth sign can have a balancing effect on fire, helping Sagittarius in material ways, like Andie does with Pacey's troubles in school. But being mutable means each sign can feel restless. Cheating is very likely in a Virgo/Sagittarius relationship, reflecting the reason Andie and Pacey ultimately break up. These signs are much better as friends, which we see when Andie and Pacey continue to support each other after breaking up.

Libra: Mitch Leery (September 22-October 23)

Libra is a cardinal air sign, symbolized by the scales. Mitch "can't we work this out" Leery (John Wesley Shipp) avoids conflict and places his family front and center in his life — he was even willing to make things work after learning of Gail's infidelity. Libras are afraid of being alone, and we see this in the way Mitch clings to his relationship with Gail. As a cardinal sign, Libra exerts a guiding influence on their relationships — reflected in Mitch's relationship with his son Dawson, and later in his work as a school counselor at the high school. Mitch wants everyone to get along, valuing peace and balance in their family home.

The relationship between Mr. And Mrs. Leery is the joining of two air signs, who are communicative and intellectually curious. Libras value balance and Aquarians (Gail's sign) are known as the rebels of the zodiac. Libra is a cardinal modality wanting to influence others, while Aquarius is fixed. Fixed modalities like to be in charge. This sums up the differences between Gail and Mitch that lead to their separation, but it also shows how they're perfect counterpoints for one another.

Scorpio: Jen Lindley (October 23-November 22)

Scorpio is a fixed water sign, symbolized by the Scorpion. Jen "I'm experienced" Lindley (Michelle Williams) embodies the edgy, sexually adventurous persona Scorpio likes to hide behind when she moves to town during sophomore year and shakes things up. We see her more negative traits in the first couple of seasons, but by the end of the show, Jen has embraced the depth of her emotions and her empathy. As a fixed water sign, Scorpios can be intense and obsessive, but they are also complex, yearning for intensity and authenticity in their relationships.

When Jen moves to Capeside from New York, she tries to leave her wild ways behind her by encouraging Dawson's interest, which resembles the safety of a golden retriever's admiration. As two water signs, Dawson and Jen's relationship lacks passion, but has an abundance of emotional support and understanding. Jen and Dawson are better friends than lovers, as we see when they finally end their on-again, off-again romance as friends during college. Jen's friendship with Jack is a bastion of safety and stability for both characters. Scorpio and Taurus are each other's polarity. They have a natural affinity, complementing each other's personality perfectly. The relationship between Jack and Jen is not a romantic one, but they think of each other as "soulmates" — something Jack says before Jen dies in the series finale. Further evidence of their powerful bond is Jen trusting Jack to raise her daughter, Amy, after Jen dies.

Sagittarius: Pacey Witter (November 22-December 21)

Sagittarius is a mutable fire sign, symbolized by the Archer. Known for their adventurousness, warmth, and sense of humor, Pacey "I'll joke about it" Witter (Joshua Jackson) is the perfect example of Sagittarian nature. Pacey is easily the most lovable character on "Dawson's Creek." He has the emotional warmth of all the fire signs and an adventurous streak, making him the black sheep in his family. Pacey's friendship with Dawson is a safe place, giving Pacey a family that is more accepting and supportive than his own. Ultimately, their relationship is strained when they fall in love with the same girl, Joey Potter. Although they do become friends again, it's never the same.

Sagittarius can find it hard to focus, struggling to follow through with projects, as we saw in Pacey's constant struggle with grades and school despite his intelligent and curious nature. He struggles with deadlines, something that both Joey and Andie try to help him with. But when an Archer finds focus, they have a strong drive to complete their projects. We see this when Pacey rebuilds his sail boat, True Love. Pacey's summer with Joey, when they sail away from Capeside on True Love, reflects his Sagittarian desire to explore the world, but also the joyful connection these two signs share.

Sagittarius and Gemini are opposites, sitting across from each other on the zodiac wheel. Sharing a mutable modality, both signs can be restless and enjoy change. Joey and Pacey's love begins as a friendship defined by their verbal duels, both enjoying the intellectual stimulation they get from one another. Joey and Pacey are surprised by how deep their emotions become for each other, and this is representative of a Sagittarius/Gemini bond. It isn't unusual for one or both people in this paring to run away, as Joey does during their senior year. Neither sign is comfortable with overwhelming emotions, and both mutable signs can be runners. But if they come back together, as Pacey and Joey do in the series finale, we see an exceptionally compatible and passionate bond between two signs that complement each other innately.

Capricorn: Gram Ryan (December 21-January 20)

Capricorn is a cardinal earth sign, symbolized by the Goat. As an earth sign, Capricorns are disciplined, responsible, traditional, and serious. Gram "it's my way or the highway" Ryan (Mary Beth Peil) is a principled woman who believes in rules and doesn't know how to compromise. On the surface, it might seem like the tension between Jen and Gram is generational, or based solely on a difference of religion, but if we look at their relationship through an astrological lens, we can see their inherent incompatibilities. Gram's sign is cardinal, feeling most comfortable when they can guide and influence those around them. Jen is a Scorpio, with a fixed modality. People with a fixed modality like to be in charge and resist the influence and advice of others. But a friendship or relationship between a water and earth sign can be transformational. Earth signs can give water signs the stability and structure they need to thrive, as Gram did for Jen. Water signs can literally soften an earth sign's stubbornness, as we see happen to Gram when she learns to accept Jen for who she is, and when Gram welcomes Jack into her home and heart.

Aquarius: Gail Leery (January 20-February 18)

Aquarius is a fixed air sign, symbolized by the Water Bearer. Aquarians are original, individualistic, and inquisitive. Gail "I need an intellectual connection" Leery (Mary-Margaret Humes) is intelligent and independent. Like all air signs, she needs mental stimulation to be happy. Aquarians are talented with language and gravitate to careers where communication is key. Gail works as a news anchor in Season 1 and 2 of "Dawson's Creek." Despite being devoted to her family, her career is important to her. Settling down, becoming a mother and wife, can be a challenge for air signs. Their natural restlessness makes it hard to feel satisfied with family life, as we see when Gail has an affair with her co-anchor. Despite her infidelity, Mitch wants to work things out, which is typical of a Libra. Sharing their air element gives this couple a natural connection and intellectual understanding of each other. This is clear when they find their way back to each other after separating, choosing to renew their vows at the end of Season 3.

Pisces: Dawson Leery (February 18-March 20)

Pisces is a mutable water sign, symbolized by the Fish. Dawson "I reject reality" Leery (James Van Der Beek) is dreamy, creative and emotional. Dawson is always looking for his soulmate, drifting on the tides of emotion from one relationship to the next; yet he is more stable than some Pisces, probably because of an earth moon or rising (Virgo), and solid family support. An earth sign would be the best match for Dawson. Both Virgos and Taurus is a compatible match with Pisces. Unfortunately, Dawson doesn't date an earth sign during the six seasons of this show, but his easy friendship with both Andie and Jack shows how well Pisces matches with Virgo and Taurus.

When Jen moves in with Gram, Dawson falls for the girl next door. The only problem: Dawson is perhaps too innocent for Jen. He's upset when he discovers her adventurous past, ultimately feeling misled — a common emotion for naïve Pisces. Theirs is an on-again off-again relationship; it's as friends that Dawson and Jen are best able to connect through their water element, being able to understand and support each other on an emotional level.

Dawson's relationship with Joey, and then his place in their love triangle with Pacey, continues throughout the entire series. Like all Pisces, Dawson is searching for his one true love, and as much as he wants her to be, Joey isn't the one. Trust can be a weak spot between Pisces and Gemini, something we see when Joey lies to Dawson about sleeping with Pacey. Pisces are too perceptive to not know they're being lied to, and they resent it. Gemini and Pisces are on completely different wavelengths. Where Gemini is rational and restless, Pisces is emotional and devoted. The one area where these two signs can connect is their mutable modality and their need for creative expression.
