The Reluctant Traveler - What We Know So Far
Eugene Levy has been a prolific and successful comedy actor for decades. He gained notoriety for Christopher Guest films such as "Best In Show" and "Waiting For Guffman" (per IMDb), and his working relationship with Catherine O'Hara in those films translated well to their onscreen chemistry as television husband and wife in the popular series "Schitt's Creek."
Most viewers will recognize the actor as Johnny Rose, the patriarch of the Rose family in the previously mentioned series. The show was a family affair, originally developed by Levy's son Dan Levy (via Variety). Together the duo worked on the show which became critically acclaimed in its later seasons, winning 9 Emmy Awards cumulatively, according to the Emmys website.
Though "Schitt's Creek" concluded after six seasons, Levy will be returning to the small screen in no time. His next project has just started development, so information is scarce. Here is what we know about the release date, cast, and plot for Levy's new show "The Reluctant Traveler."
When is the release date for The Reluctant Traveler?
"The Reluctant Traveler" is in its early stages with no release date as of yet. The show is for Apple TV+ who just announced that the series was going to order earlier in November (via Apple TV+). This likely means that audiences won't see the series this year, unfortunately. However, Apple has a history of trying to get its content out as quickly as possible. If its previous series are any indication, the streaming platform will not wait on distribution.
For example, the music documentary series "The Velvet Underground" was first announced in October of 2020 (via Apple TV+'s press release). The series was released on October 15th of 2021 (per Salon). This is only a difference of a year, meaning "The Reluctant Traveler" has every chance of being on viewers' screens as early as November 2022 — barring any disaster or delays.
Who is in the cast of The Reluctant Traveler?
The new series is still in development and only has one actor confirmed. Eugene Levy will be the main face on viewers' screens when they see "The Reluctant Traveler." Levy will not only be in front of the camera, but behind it. The actor is also set to produce the series behind the scenes (via Deadline).
Deadline also revealed that David Brindley will also be producing. Brindley is the creative director of Twofour, the production company that is supporting "The Reluctant Traveler." Brindley's main claim to fame was as the BBC Commissioner before leaving to lead Twofour, per Deadline. According to this recent information drop, it appears that the series is a departure from Levy's usual comedic fare, so it may be unlikely viewers will see familiar faces from previous works. For example, Levy's son Dan Levy is currently committed and branching out with a new show for HBO Max. We can only speculate who may appear additionally.
What is the plot of The Reluctant Traveler?
"The Reluctant Traveler" will not be familiar territory to fans or even to Eugene Levy himself. The actor has departed from comedy in this series and instead is heading into the world of unscripted television. The Apple TV+ show is a travel docuseries that will be hosted by Levy who is by all accounts, quite reluctant to participate — turns out, there is truth in advertising. Levy admits that he is not a globe-trotter himself, though this is what the show will be requesting of him (per Apple TV+). The series will follow Levy as he travels the world, searching for new experiences.
As stated in Apple's press release, Levy hopes to "broaden his horizons" while still eating dinner at a reasonable hour. Levy should be a relatable host in "The Reluctant Traveler" and someone that everyone can identify with. The series will join Apple's collection of documentaries such as "Beastie Boys Story" and "Billie Eilish: The World's A Little Blurry."
