The Matrix Resurrections Character Fans Think Is Secretly The Oracle

In 1999, Lilly and Lana Wachowski unveiled "The Matrix" to the world — a film that totally changed the game in more ways than one. It blended philosophy and sci-fi action to perfection, hosted innovative filming techniques, and proved itself the perfect starting point to Hollywood's next big franchise. However, by the end of 2003, the phenomenon was all over. Both "The Matrix Reloaded" and "The Matrix Revolutions" debuted that year, and though they did a decent enough job rounding off the overarching story, they collectively ended the trilogy with a whimper instead of a roar.

As of this writing, it has been 18 years since the entertainment world last unplugged from "The Matrix," and despite the final two entries in the series' failure to live up to expectations, it's nearly time to finally go back in. "The Matrix Resurrections" will premiere on December 22, 2021, presumably picking up where "Revolutions" left off and reuniting a familiar cast of characters. Keanu Reeves is back as Neo, Carrie-Anne Moss will play Trinity yet again, Lambert Wilson returns as the Merovingian, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will take the torch from Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus.

It stands to reason that "The Matrix Resurrections" will likely feature nods to and cameos from the previous "Matrix" movies not shown in the promotional material. Although, fans believe they've already spotted fan-favorite the Oracle, based on trailers alone, albeit in a different form than the one we all recognize.

Is Neo's therapist the next Oracle?

Of the many interesting entities present in the "Matrix" franchise, the Oracle is in a league of her own. Created by the machines to aid in the development of the latest Matrix program, she went into hiding once she'd served her purpose. Her newfound autonomy led her to work with the human resistance, utilizing her clairvoyance and vast knowledge of the human psyche to help their cause. Actress Gloria Foster took on the role for the first two "Matrix" films, but her death in 2001 resulted in Mary Alice taking over for the third.

According to a fan theory posted on Reddit, a third actor may be in line to become the Oracle in "The Matrix Resurrections": Neil Patrick Harris. As Redditor themightyheptagon explains, the Architect (Helmut Bakaitis) explicitly stated in "The Matrix Reloaded" the point of the Oracle's existence was "to investigate certain aspects of the human psyche." Coincidentally, Harris' still-unnamed therapist character is doing the exact same thing in the "Matrix Resurrections" trailer as he chats with Thomas "Neo" Anderson about his dreams and general mental anguish.

Of course, this could be nothing more than an unintended parallel between two totally separate digital beings. We've yet to learn whether or not the Oracle will appear in "The Matrix Resurrections," let alone who has hypothetically signed on for the part. But then again, in true "Matrix" fashion, the answer to such questions could be right in front of our faces, and we simply don't know it yet.
