What You Need To Remember Before Watching Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2
The dark fantasy anime "Jujutsu Kaisen" is based on a manga series that debuted in the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump, which has likewise been home to the source material behind anime megahits like "Dragon Ball," "One Piece," and countless others (via Anime News Network). Thus far, even though only one season exists of the "Jujutsu Kaisen" anime, that season is a big hit, thanks likely in part to the hallowed ground of its source material.
TV viewership statistics tracker Parrot Analytics, for example, determined "Jujutsu Kaisen" to be in the top 2.7% of all TV series in the US, based on its proprietary metric meant to viewer demand. Meanwhile in 2020, when the first season of "Jujutsu Kaisen" aired, the series topped a list compiled from data gathered by MyAnimeList and shared by Crunchyroll as the most popular anime released that year. Competition it beat out included new seasons of popular series like "Haikyuu!!" and "Re:Zero."
Based on the success of its first season, then, it's shouldn't come as a surprise that fans are expecting a "Jujutsu Kasien" Season 2, despite the current absence of official confirmation. For viewers new and old alike, here are some key plot points worth remembering whenever Season 2 finally approaches.
Gojo will be back in a big way
Throughout "Jujutsu Kaisen" Season 1, Satoru Gojo acts as a mentor figure to — and cornerstone of — the team of fighters assembled at the Tokyo Branch of Jujutsu High School. In short, Jujutsu High trains humans to wield superpowers fueled by a resource called Cursed Energy, in service of saving the world from evil manifestations of human ills called Cursed Spirits, or oftentimes Curses for short. Gojo is both significant in his capacity as an educator at Jujutsu High, as well as the most valuable player on the human side of the fight against Curses thanks to his unmatched power.
Episode 5 reveals the existence of a group of Cursed Spirits hoping to alter the world permanently such that humans are replaced by Curses as the dominant species on Earth. They identify none other than Gojo as the primary hindrance to that goal. In Episodes 6 and 7, they begin to outline a plan to seal off Gojo's powers using a Cursed Object called Prison Realm after luring him into a trap in Shibuya on October 31.
So far, Gojo has acted as a sort of deus ex machina, overpowering all of his Cursed Spirit opponents with ease, while simultaneously manipulating the brass at Jujutsu High to fall in line with his greater aims. Given the Cursed Spirit group's upcoming plans to defeat him, however, Gojo's story is set to become quite a bit more complicated come Season 2.
The Cursed Spirit group includes some mysterious members
Upon their introduction, the group of Cursed Spirits plotting Gojo's demise and their world domination is comprised of the volcano-like Gojo, the plantlike Hanami, the squid-like Dagon, and the evil Jujutsu Sorcerer Suguru Geto. A few episodes later, the humanesque Mahito is revealed to be a key member of the group too, before serving as the primary antagonist of an ensuing story arc.
More member still appear, albeit briefly, during the Kyoto Goodwill Event Arc. This includes Haruta Shigemo, who's introduced in Episode 20, and exits the ongoing fight between the Jujutsu High faculty and the Cursed Spirit group before ever properly engaging in battle. In the next episode, he contemplates finishing off an injured Hanami before Mahito stops him. Haruta has yet to showcase his combat prowess, so his Season 1 reveal is most likely a tease for a more significant role in Season 2. Likewise, as members of the Jujutsu High faculty question captured group member Jozo, he reveals a white-haired monk to be an ally to the Cursed Spirits. They similarly have yet to return in any significant capacity.
Finally, the final story arc of "Jujutsu Kasien" Season 1 revolves around two Cursed Spirit brothers, Kechizu and Eso, manifested from Cursed Paintings. While they're now defeated, their third brother Choso remains a member of the Cursed Spirit crew, and mad at his brothers' deaths, teeing him up for some Season 2 action.
Sukuna is an ever-present threat
In addition to defeating Gojo, another key component of the Cursed Spirit group's plan to take over the world is winning the allyship of Ryomen Sukuna, the most powerful Curse in the history of Curses, who now resides in protagonist Itadori Yuji's body. During the Vs. Mahito Arc, Mahito manipulates a boy named Junpei to psychologically torment Yuji in hopes of compelling him to enter into an unfavorable pact with the Curse that resides within him. Little does Mahito know, however, that Sukuna tricked Yuji on his own into a pact that allows him to take control of Yuji's body at will for a minute at a time. This has yet to happen, so fans can expect their pact to pay off in the series' future.
Furthermore, the Curse team reveals in Episode 14 that they plan on gathering as many of Sukuna's fingers — of which he once had twenty in total, each now containing a portion of his power — as an offering through which to earn his cooperation. One of these fingers appears in the "Jujutsu Kaisen" Season 1 finale, and Sukuna promptly absorbs its power after the protagonist group secures it. However, after successfully breaking into a vault at Jujutsu High during the Kyoto Sister-School Goodwill Event, the Curses possess at least five additional Sukuna fingers, which they seem to still plan on using to entice Sukuna into supporting their cause.
The Kyoto students will return
The beginning of the Kyoto Goodwill Event Arc serves as something of an introduction to the students of the Kyoto branch of Jujutsu High. Initially, they're somewhat antagonistic, outright fighting some of the Tokyo students upon their introduction in Episode 8, prior to the event's start. Furthermore, Kyoto principal Yoshinobu Gakuganji orders his students to kill Yuji, believing him too dangerous, given that his body contains the spirit of Sukuna.
Nearing the arc's end, however, the Tokyo and Kyoto contingents of Jujutsu High work alongside one another to fight off a Cursed Spirit attack, and Gojo even attempts to convince Gakuganji of Yuji's value. Meanwhile, during the Kyoto Sister-School Goodwill Event, Gojo suspects that the Kyoto school houses a mole, working with the Cursed Spirits in secret. Then, nearing the final moments of the "Jujutsu Kaisen" Season 1 finale, Gojo speaks to Kyoto faculty member Utahime Iori about the mole before calling Yuji and his classmates in for a secret mission. Whether or not this mission is directly related to the mole, the Kyoto students are likely to return one way or another given their extended introduction midway through Season 1.
That said, if Season 2 is anything like its first, the future of "Jujutsu Kaisen" has plenty of surprises in store for viewers. These, then, are likely the bare bones of the upcoming season, from which plenty of unexpected moments should surely arise.
