The Real Reason This Love Scene Was Cut From The Boys
Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's comic series "The Boys" is a deconstruction of the superhero genre through a violently depraved lens, which meant "Supernatural" creator Eric Kripke didn't have an easy job adapting the comics for Amazon Prime Video. In any case, the show perfectly captures the heart of the original source material while also being its own beast. However, it's fair to say that it's one of the goriest comic-book-inspired shows of all time. It's definitely up there with the likes of "Preacher" and "The Walking Dead."
Homelander (Antony Starr) is the most brutal "hero" in the series as he constantly bisects people with his heat vision, or crushes them with his super strength. Although Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) and his team aren't innocent either, just look at the way Hughie (Jack Quaid) blows up Translucent (Alex Hassell) with a carefully placed internal bomb. But blood and guts aside, the show also relishes in over-the-top sex scenes involving superheroes.
Most of the costumed crusaders have some kind of vice, whether it's drink, drugs, or sex. Let's not forget Homelander's obsession with breastmilk! He definitely has some maternal issues that he needs to work through. According to Kripke, there was one racy scene that the team cut from "The Boys" because it was just too much.
An icy affair
Because "The Boys" comics are so depraved, it isn't surprising that some things Kripke wanted to bring into live-action were vetoed by the streaming service. The comic was of its time, and some things have aged better than others, but it wouldn't be "The Boys" without some extreme superheroic perversions. Butcher and Hughie visit a super-orgy in Season 1 where superheroes use their abilities to get intimate in various different ways. But apparently, one sexy scene didn't make it into the show due to budgetary reasons.
When speaking to Entertainment Weekly in 2019, Eric Kripke revealed that Amazon rejected a scene around an icy hero. He explained the scene involved "an ice man having sex with a woman" while she's clad in a fur coat. Wow. Well, at least they would've given the woman a fur coat because that sounds chilly. Kripke noted that it didn't make the cut because "It was rejected because it was logistically too difficult to mount on our budget."
It's surprising Kripke didn't revisit the idea in Season 2 when Hughie and Lamplighter (Shawn Ashmore) are watching various different superhero porn parodies. It would've been a brilliant reference if there was an Icy porn scene — since Ashmore played Iceman in the Fox "X-Men" franchise. Who knows, maybe audiences will get to see it when Season 3 adapts the "Herogasm" story arc.
