The Chosen One Season 3 - What We Know So Far

The first two seasons of Netflix's thriller series "The Chosen One" take you to a remote region of Brazil, where three doctors travel to vaccinate a faraway village against a dangerous new type of the highly deadly Zika virus. Unfortunately for them, the village is in the pocket of a strange man known as the Chosen One (Renan Tenca), a mysterious spiritual healer type who's dead set against vaccinations and who appears to have powers that are not of this world. There's also a fair amount of serpent imagery, which is rarely a good thing in the land of TV.

The second season of "The Chosen One" came out back in 2019, but we're still waiting for the third season — which would, incidentally, be incredibly topical, seeing as dangerous epidemics and vaccinations have been around quite a bit lately. So, how much longer do you have to wait? Let's take a look at what we know so far about the release date, cast and plot of "The Chosen One" Season 3.

What's the release date for The Chosen One Season 3?

The first six-episode season of "The Chosen One" debuted on June 28, 2019, and the second one arrived on December 6 of the same year. Of course, the show hasn't been keeping this schedule up — otherwise, you'd already been able to watch Season 3 and Season 4, as well. So, what's the holdup?

"The Chosen One" Season 3 is currently stuck in limbo. Netflix hasn't officially renewed the show, but hasn't cancelled it, either. As such, there's hope for "The Chosen One" yet, and the fact that Season 2 didn't  wrap up the story gives hope that a third season might figure in Netflix's plans, at least at some point. Granted, Netflix has been known to cancel popular shows surprisingly, but the fact that "The Chosen One" hasn't suffered this fate yet could indicate that the platform is  waiting for an opportune moment to make the Season 3 announcement. After all, pandemic movies and shows are a potentially sensitive subject at the moment.

Once the good news arrives, hopefully soon, the production cycle of a show like this typically takes about a year. This, and the streaming platform's history of dropping "The Chosen One" seasons on summer or in December, means that the absolute earliest you can probably expect Season 3 is summer 2022.

Who's in the cast of The Chosen One Season 3?

Before "The Chosen One" Season 3 is announced, there's no telling who'll be in the cast. However, assuming that it's coming, you can be pretty certain that Renan Tenca's charismatic titular character will return to preside over his flock. It's likely that Paloma Bernardi, Gutto Szuster, and Pedro Caetano will also return as Lúcia Santeiro, Enzo Vergani, and Damião Almeida, the three poor doctors tasked who unspool the tangles of the plot, clash with each other, and might finally vaccinate the villagers. Speaking of the villagers, the most prominent members of the community will presumably return for Season 3, though it remains to be seen how many of them will make it through the season.

That being said, for all we know, "The Chosen One" Season 3 could take place in a large city after a time skip, with none of the original characters returning. Though this is fairly unlikely, it's worth mentioning that characters have left the village before. Who knows — maybe the narrative will, too.

What's the plot of The Chosen One Season 3?

"The Chosen One" is all about a confrontation between the doctors who try to wrap up their mission to vaccinate the villagers against a dangerous strain of the Zika virus, and a strange, increasingly worrisome spiritual healer known as the Chosen One. The show's many overlapping mysteries bear some similarity to mystery shows like "Lost," so it would probably be a good idea to watch the first two seasons before jumping aboard the hopefully upcoming Season 3.

At this point, saying almost anything about the show's plot would be venturing into spoiler territory, so let's just say that by the time Season 2 ends, almost every major character is in a perilous situation in their own ways — even the Chosen One himself. Hopefully, Season 3 will pick up quite shortly after the events of the Season 2 finale, because at this point, anything can happen. If the first two seasons are anything to go by, very little of it is going to be nice.
