With so much content coming out on streaming services, it is often easy to overlook something you would be interested in. And if your interests align with science fiction comedy, detective stories, or a combination of the two, then look no further than Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency.
The BBC America series is based on the novel of the same name by Douglas Adams, who most science fiction fans know as the author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It follows the quirky, self-proclaimed "holistic detective" Dirk Gently (Samuel Barnett) and his sidekick Todd Brotzman (Elijiah Wood) as they investigate cases. Dirk believes that everything in the universe is interconnected and often relies on fate rather than traditional methods to solve his cases.

The Observer brought up another show about a detective duo that may be in the back of your mind and ready to compare Dirk Gently to: Sherlock, of course. But, besides the bare-bones concept of two men who solve cases together, the Observer insists that the similarities stop there. "If Sherlock is an aged whiskey, Dirk Gently is a strawberry daiquiri spiked with an extra few shots of vodka from a flask disguised as a tube of sunblock," the outlet noted. And if the idea of a "strawberry daiquiri" of a protagonist isn't alluring enough, the Observer adds that the show is "gorgeous, ambitious, pre-meditated chaos ... grounded only by subtle performances by Elijah Wood, and Samuel Barnett as the titular detective."
