The Missing Thor Character We Could See In Disney+'s Loki

Hey, whatever happened to Sif?

For those who follow the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this question has loomed for years. Back in the first two Thor movies, the fearsome Asgardian fighter, played by Jaimie Alexander, was a constant presence at the sides of both the thunder god (Chris Hemsworth) and the Warriors Three, defending the Nine Realms from Frost Giants, a certain trickster god, and Dark Elves alike. She even crossed over to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., making her one of the most important MCU figures to do so. Ever since Loki (Tom Hiddleston) usurped the throne of Asgard, though, she's been M.I.A., with no explanation.

Now, for fans of the character, this isn't necessarily a bad thing — because if she had appeared in Thor: Ragnarok, she may have easily met the same tragic fate as the Warriors Three. The rampage of Hela (Cate Blanchett) was swiftly followed by the carnage of Avengers: Infinity War, which saw even more Asgardians slain by Thanos (Josh Brolin), who then proceeded to snap away half of life in the universe ... including Sif herself, according to a Huffington Post interview with the directors, though her dissolving moment was off-screen. Sif getting temporarily snapped into oblivion, though, is actually good news for Sif, herself — because even though she didn't rally with the other heroes in Endgame, it means she's still out there, somewhere. But where?

While nothing is confirmed, fans are latching onto a new Instagram post by Alexander herself, hoping Sif's return is impending.

Could Sif be coming to the set of Loki?

On November 19, 2020, Jaimie Alexander posted a selfie of herself on an airplane to Atlanta, Georgia, with the hashtag #work. Presumably, that means she's got a movie or TV series to film there ... and unless she's about to make an unexpected (and unpromoted) appearance on those new episodes of The Walking Dead, or something otherwise unrelated to the MCU, there's a pretty good chance that she's joining up with the current Marvel project that is filming in the Peach State.

That project, of course, is the upcoming Disney+ series, Loki.

So, is Sif returning? The odds look good. However, since Thor's infamous brother met his end in Infinity War, it's presumed that the Disney+ series will follow the alternate reality version of Loki first glimpsed in Avengers: Endgame, perhaps mucking about with the timeline, in his trickster way, and/or creating other divergent timelines in the process. Details are sparse, right now, but suffice to say, the involvement of parallel universes means that the Sif whom appears in Loki might not be the same Sif you know, even if Alexander is still playing the role.

Nothing is confirmed, as of this writing, though as Digital Spy has noted, Alexander was seen liking posts about Sif coming back. However, even if the Sif who may or may not appear in Loki isn't the same Sif from the MCU, having her back at least paves the way for a hypothetical return in Thor: Love and Thunder

The latter project won't start filming until early 2021, provided there are no COVID-19 delays. For now, there's no word on whether the movie will show Sif joining forces with Thor, Valkyrie, and Mighty Thor (AKA Jane Foster), but stay tuned.
