What Kat Dennings Really Thought Of Chris Hemsworth's Debut As Thor - Exclusive

While it's almost impossible now to imagine a cinematic world without Chris Hemsworth as Thor, one of his co-stars in the God of Thunder's 2011 debut once had the unique privilege of seeing what the Aussie acting sensation could bring to the role before the general moviegoing public did.

Kat Dennings – who played Darcy Lewis, one of the first three characters, along with Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård), to encounter Thor after he fell to Earth — tells Looper in an exclusive interview that she was floored at the first sight of Hemsworth preparing for his character.

As a relative unknown to U.S. audiences before playing Thor, Hemsworth was saddled with carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders in the hope his portrayal of the famed Marvel Comics character would fulfill fans' expectations. From Dennings' perspective, there was no doubt that Hemsworth would blow everyone away.

"There's no question that he was the guy. He's a tall, strapping guy naturally anyway, but he has this [thing about him]. There was no question that he was the perfect guy to play Thor," Dennings shares with Looper. "I think I came in for the table read or something at the studio and they were doing a fight rehearsal off to the side, and I saw him swinging a thing around, doing a flip, and I thought, 'Oh, okay!”'

Kat Dennings says Chris Hemsworth has classic movie star qualities

Impressed by Hemsworth right off the bat, Dennings immediately knew he not only possessed the wherewithal to bring Thor to life, but he also had the sort of charisma that rivals the stars in the Golden Age of Hollywood.

"He has such a special star quality ... he reminds me of the old movie stars. He's so handsome and he's so sweet, and he's so funny. He's really, really funny," Dennings says. "I think people know that by now. We were super close and super tight during that movie, and we spent a lot of time together. We were buds, and he's one of the funniest people I've ever met."

While Hemsworth is set to reunite with Portman in director Taika Waititi's Thor: Love and Thunder, Dennings will be coming back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe this year to reprise her role as Darcy in the Disney+ series WandaVision. As to where Darcy goes from there, Dennings has said that she won't be in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Still, having worked with Hemsworth in Thor and 2013's Thor: The Dark World must certainly have its advantages. After all, if she still has a tight bond with Hemsworth, what could hurt if she gave him a shout-out?

"I'll see who I can call," Dennings says, laughing.

Dennings' latest film is the comedy Friendsgiving, which is now playing in theaters and is available on digital, Blu-ray, and DVD.
