Doctor Who Christmas Special Will Feature Doctor Mysterio

Doctor Who will make his annual Christmas Day appearance, but this year he'll be getting some help.

The BBC revealed details and a teaser for the Doctor Who Christmas special, which will premiere Christmas day in the U.K.

According to a press release, "The Return of Doctor Mysterio" will find the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) working with the aforementioned superhero to save New York City from a deadly alien threat. Justin Chatwin (Orphan Black) plays Doctor Mysterio, who looks to be a playful amalgam of Batman and Superman. They'll be joined by an investigative journalist played by Charity Wakefield (Wolf Hall), and the teaser hints that Matt Lucas could also return as Nardole.

But it's looking like the end of an era for Doctor Who, as the upcoming season will be the last for showrunner Steven Moffat, who will be replaced by Chris Chibnall (Broadchurch). And since Capaldi is only signed on through this season, there's a chance the Doctor might soon regenerate with a new actor.

Meanwhile, Capaldi also shows up as Doctor Who in the first teaser for the spinoff Class. Set at the Coal Hill Secondary School, the series revolves around a group of students and their teacher who are tasked (presumably by the Doctor) with saving all of human existence on top of their homework.
