All 4 Halloween Episodes Of The Big Bang Theory, Ranked
Halloween episodes are a time-honored tradition in sitcoms; it's always fun to watch our favorite characters dress up for the holidays, after all. On a show as pop-culture centered as "The Big Bang Theory," you'd think Halloween would play a bigger role in the proceedings. Still, across twelve seasons of "The Big Bang Theory," there are only four Halloween-centric episodes. (You might be experiencing the Mandela effect here, so let's clear one thing up: the episode where the central gang of "The Big Bang Theory" dresses up like the Justice League is not a Halloween episode, but an episode centered around a comic book convention with a costume contest.)
Still, we can rank the four Halloween episodes featured on "The Big Bang Theory," which, as you probably know, is the massively popular CBS sitcom created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady that ran from 2007 to 2019. Throughout the run of the series, physicists and roommates Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter (Jim Parsons and Johnny Galecki), their friends Howard Wolowitz and Raj Koothrappali (Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar), their neighbor Penny (Kaley Cuoco), and Sheldon and Howard's eventual love interests Amy Farrah Fowler and Bernadette Rostenkowski (Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch) get into all sorts of hilarious scrapes and adventures, but let's rank their Halloween-themed escapades. Here are all four of the Halloween of "The Big Bang Theory," ranked — just in case you want to queue up a spooky mini-marathon.
4. The Middle Earth Paradigm (Season 1, Episode 6)
The first season of "The Big Bang Theory" certainly put the show on the map and won over audiences across the world, but when you compare it to later seasons as the series really hit its stride, it's sort of weak in comparison. That's why the show's first Halloween episode, "The Middle Earth Paradigm," lands at the bottom of this short list; it's not terrible, but it's not as good as its cohorts thanks to some fairly lazy jokes.
A sort of strange thing — and one that wasn't planned at all — about "The Big Bang Theory" is that one year after it started airing, the Marvel Cinematic Universe kicked off with "Iron Man," and things that wre once considered "nerd culture" became mainstream. Still, even stuff like "Lord of the Rings" was a pretty big deal by 2007, so when Leonard gets soundly mocked for dressing up as a Hobbit from Middle-Earth at Penny's party, it sort of rings false. So what does work here? Sheldon dresses as a "Doppler effect" (obviously, nobody gets it), and Leonard works up the courage to confront Penny's evil ex-boyfriend Kurt (Brian Patrick Wade) when he shows up at the party in an attempt to impress Penny.
The other highlight of this episode is that, after Kurt humiliates Leonard, Penny kisses him for the first time ... and like a gentleman, he turns down her advances because she's drunk. There are some good moments in this Halloween episode of "The Big Bang Theory," but the whole "nerds are losers" thing is already stale by this point in Season 1.
3. The Good Guy Fluctuation (Season 5, Episode 7)
Let's get one thing out of the way. "The Good Guy Fluctuation," the Season 5 Halloween episode of "The Big Bang Theory," takes place during the "Priya Era," which is what we're calling the part of the series where Leonard is stuck in a slog of a long-distance relationship with Raj's sister Priya Koothrappali (Aarti Mann). The main crux of this episode is that Leonard meets a girl named Alice (Courtney Ford) at a comic book shop and ends up kissing her; when he confesses to Priya over video chat, she reveals that she hooked up with her ex-boyfriend. Oh well!
The best thing about "The Good Guy Fluctuation," though, is the situation with Sheldon, Leonard, Howard, and Raj. When Sheldon tries to prank his friends, every single prank backfires; Raj develops a strange affection for a snake Sheldon leaves in his desk, Leonard manages to turn an airbag in his mailbox back on Sheldon, and when Sheldon shakes hands with Howard wearing a joy buzzer, Bernadette and Howard successfully trick Sheldon into thinking Howard is dying from a heart condition. Finally, right after Leonard ends his video call with Priya, Sheldon leaps out from under the couch and successfully scares Leonard ... and yes, he lets out a victorious "Bazinga" in the process.
2. The Imitation Perturbation (Season 12, Episode 6)
"The Big Bang Theory" is always fun when the characters successfully rile each other up, and this is on perfect display in the show's final Halloween episode, Season 12's "The Imitation Perturbation." As Penny and Leonard plan a Halloween party for old time's sake, Howard promises a truly terrifying costume, and he shows up dressed as ... Sheldon. At work, Leonard is mightily impressed by the commitment from Howard — who takes one look at Raj's Ruth Bader Ginsburg costume and rattles off a series of obscure factoids about the Supreme Court — but then when Sheldon figures out that they're all making fun of him, he's extremely ticked off.
Ultimately, Sheldon and Amy get their petty revenge when they arrive at a party dressed as Howard and Bernadette, which, in turn, ticks off the couple — who defended Howard's Sheldon get-up as an innocent joke. By the end of the episode, though, everyone is back on good terms after Sheldon and Bernadette sit down and grapple with the fact that they've been bullied their whole lives for being a know-it-all and being short with a squeaky voice, respectively. Elsewhere, Leonard is miffed that Penny can't remember their first kiss — after the Halloween party in "The Middle Earth Paradigm," actually — and they decide to make new Halloween memories. "The Imitation Perturbation" is a pretty great Halloween episode of "The Big Bang Theory," so what takes the top spot?
1. The Holographic Excitation (Season 6, Episode 5)
The number one spot on this list of the best Halloween episodes of "The Big Bang Theory" absolutely has to go to "The Holographic Excitation," because not only it is an all-around standout episode of the series, but it features Bernadette and Howard painted completely blue when they dress up as Papa Smurf and Smurfette. As the gang prepares to attend a Halloween party at Stuart Bloom's (Kevin Sussman) comic book store, Amy and Sheldon can't stop arguing over their couples costume; while Amy hopes to go with a romantic angle and go as Romeo and Juliet, Sheldon's would prefer that they dress up as the Star Wars droids R2-D2 and C-3PO or, even more bafflingly, Hewlett and Packard. As those two argue, Bernadette grows tired of Howard bragging about his recent space expedition, Raj helps organize the party with Stuart, and Leonard invites Penny to his lab to show her his work ... and Penny finds herself so titillated by all of Leonard's scientific jargon that she locks the door so they can have some uninterrupted time together.
At the party itself, Bernadette and Howard show up in their baby blues — Bernadette makes a joke about washing blue out of her "smurf" for months afterwards — while Penny dons a sexy cop costume, Leonard dresses as Albert Einstein, and Amy and Sheldon compromise by going as ... "Raggedy C-3PO" and Raggedy Ann. All in all, "The Holographic Excitation" is a pretty good "Big Bang Theory" installment, and it's the best Halloween episode.
"The Big Bang Theory" is streaming on HBO Max now.
