Why The Lanterns Finale Is Leaving DC Comics Fans Furious
HBO's "Lanterns" Season 1 has concluded after eight thrilling episodes, showing fans that a noir-themed murder mystery show is exactly what the DC Universe needs. However, it's interesting that the series has been so well-received, while simultaneously managing to anger viewers with its ending. Watch Looper's video above to find out just what the "Lanterns" finale did to make DC Comics fans so furious.
In all fairness, the show's big "sin" is simply committing to its mission statement. "Lanterns" Episode 1 seemingly killed off a major DC character when it revealed that Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) is dead. It was a pretty big revelation and a major move from the show, considering how important Hal is to the Green Lantern lore. As such, it was easy to expect a last-minute plot twist revealing that the character is still alive. When "Lanterns" ends, however, Hal is done and dusted.
While Hal Jordan has had decades of comic book history under his belt, removing him this early in the game suggests that the DCU intends to either ignore or repurpose a whole lot of Hal's story, which was bound to irk fans of the character.
Lanterns fans loved Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan
Despite historically being considered the greatest of Earth's Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan comes with the baggage of the 2011 Ryan Reynolds "Green Lantern" film, which might or might not be why the DCU has seemingly opted to focus on fellow Lanterns John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion). Regardless of the reason, "Lanterns" is left dealing with the admittedly positive problem of having an actor who's incredible in the role — perhaps too incredible.
Kyle Chandler absolutely owns the role of an older, jaded Hal, to the point that fans were keen to see him become a full-on DCU fixture. Sinestro (Ulrich Thomsen) does tease the possibility of reviving fallen Green Lanterns in the "Lanterns" Season 1 finale, so who knows? A resurrection storyline might actually be a realistic possibility. Like so many superheroes, Hal Jordan has cheated death before — but as Looper's video above will tell you, some fans have very particular opinions about his death on "Lanterns."
