2026's Wildest Box Office Week Had Something For Everyone

In the past, when a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie topped the domestic box office, there was no room for any other title to excel financially. That certainly wasn't true for the September 25-27, 2026 frame with the release of "Avengers: Endgame Encore," which you can learn more about in our video above. 

While "Avengers: Endgame Encore" blew everyone away at the box office, "Resident Evil" grossed another $23.3 million in its second frame. Meanwhile, the Brad Pitt star vehicle "Heart of the Beast" debuted to a decent $20 million and "Primetime" had one A24's best opening weekends ever with a $19.1 million bow.

Rounding out the top five was "Forgotten Island," a new DreamWorks Animation film that opened to a disappointing $13 million. Though it's destined to join the legacy of other DreamWorks Animation bombs, "Forgotten Island" still ensured that there was something for everyone at the movies this week. Whether you wanted horror fare, a dose of 2019 superhero movie nostalgia, a dark descent into reality television, or a hyperactive animated comedy, you could find it and so much more at your local multiplex.

Such cinematic variety is incredibly welcome and vital for any thriving box office landscape. Movie theaters can't survive on just one big movie at a time, but should rather have the plethora of options spanning multiple different aesthetics that this frame sported.

A key reason 2026 hits like "Obsession" blew everyone away at the box office was because they excelled in appealing towards younger audiences. That demographic proved crucial towards this late September's box office success, particularly "Primetime." 69% of its opening weekend audience was 30 or younger, an age range that's also propelled recent hits like "Backrooms" and "Sinners." In a Hollywood landscape still mining '70s and '80s nostalgia, "Primetime" stood out to younger audiences with its examination of 2000s pop culture. That, along with the promise of Robert Pattinson playing Chris Hansen, proved a potent recipe for success.

"Endgame Encore" similarly thrived with younger audiences as folks between the ages of 18 and 34 made up 66% of its robust opening weekend launch. Resonating with that crowd is how "Endgame Encore" scored the third biggest domestic bow ever for a theatrical re-release. Throwing in those three post-credit scenes tied into "Avengers: Doomsday" certainly didn't hurt either. All of these feats, not to mention that "Resident Evil" and "Heart of the Beast" moolah, helped make this the second-best late September weekend ever at the North American box office.
