Why Guy Gardner Once Used Sinestro's Yellow Ring
Nathan Fillion's perfectly awful Guy Gardner is the Green Lantern with the most DC Universe appearances so far, but it might surprise you to hear that he hasn't always been as green as you might assume. In the comics, the character once used the Qwaardian Yellow Power Ring as his weapon of choice, and Looper's video above will fill you in on this strange period in the character's history.
The Yellow Power Ring is most famously associated with popular DC Comics villain Thaal Sinestro, played on "Lanterns" by Ulrich Thomsen. However, he's far from the only one to use it. The history of the Green Lantern Corps features conflicts with entire armies that use rings powered by other colors on the emotional spectrum, including Sinestro's own Sinestro Corps, which weaponize fear with their Yellow Power Rings. Guy was never a member of that particular squad, but for some time, he used Sinestro's own power ring as a tool of his own (anti)heroics.
A defeat to Hal Jordan prompts Guy Gardner to seek out the Yellow Power Ring
The precursor to Guy Gardner's tenure as a Yellow Power Ring user comes in 1992, when "Green Lantern Vol. 3" #25 saw Hal Jordan (played on "Lanterns" by Kyle Chandler) return to Earth to resume his duties as the Green Lantern of the sector. Guy wants none of that, though, and challenges Hal to a "winner takes all" battle: The Lantern who comes out on top takes the sector, and the loser quits the Green Lantern Corps.
Challenging Earth's greatest Green Lantern turns out to be an ill-informed idea, and the overconfident Guy ends up losing everything. After a few false starts to reclaim his hero identity in his solo title "Guy Gardner Reborn," he discovers Sinestro's ring during a major conflict on the planet Oa and after subduing the villain's very soul in a battle of wills, he attains control of the powerful weapon. What follows is one of the stranger journeys a Green Lantern has ever taken, and Looper's video above will get you up to speed with Guy's adventures with the Yellow Power Ring.
