The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance Sneak Peek Video Unveiled At SDCC 2019
The world of Thra is just beyond your reach, and Netflix can hardly wait to invite you in.
At San Diego Comic-Con 2019, the streamer revealed an additional look its upcoming series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance in the form of a sneak peek video.
The clip, which is part of the newly announced documentary The Making of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, details just how much work was put into Netflix and the Jim Henson Company's take on The Dark Crystal series, a prequel to Henson's own puppet-animated dark fantasy film from 1982.
Though Wendy Froud, the assistant costume designer on The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, joked in the video that "there's so few people that know how we did it the first time, and we're so old we don't remember how we did it," executive producer Lisa Henson explained the pain-staking methods required to bring the fantastical characters to life.
"Everything is hand-sculpted, hand-painted. Just an amazing amount of craftsmanship that you see across the whole image," she said.
Director and executive producer Louis Leterrier added, "The idea is you watch the show and you forget you're watching puppets."
Of course, another huge goal with The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is to live up to the '80s film, which told the story of Jen (Jim Henson), an elven creature known as a "Gelfling," who embarks on a mystic quest to restore peace and equilibrium to the planet of Thra by healing a piece of a powerful Dark Crystal gem.
The Age of Resistance team isn't only focused on the stunning visuals of the series, which implements no CGI and entirely relies on puppetry just as the original Dark Crystal movie did, as a way to honor its predecessor, but is also devoted to delivering an incredible story told by an equally sterling cast.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance centers around Rian (Taron Egerton), a Gelfling Crystal Castle guard from the Stonewood Clan; Deet (Nathalie Emmanuel), an animal carer, Gelfling, and member of the the Grottan Clan; Brea (Anya Taylor-Joy), the Vapra Clan Gelfling princess; and Aughra (Donna Kimball), an astronomer who serves as the physical embodiment of Thra. When Rian, Deet, and Brea band together after discovering a terrifying, life-changing secret, they spark a rebellion against the Seven Deadly Sins-inspired villains known as the Skeksis.
Also aboard The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance are Eddie Izzard, Helena Bonham Carter, Caitriona Balfe, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Lena Headey, Alicia Vikander, Hannah John-Kamen, Natalie Dormer, Mark Strong, Theo James, Dave Goelz, Simon Pegg, Awkwafina, Jason Isaacs, Benedict Wong, Harvey Fierstein, Andy Samberg, Keegan-Michael Key, Mark Hamill, and more.
Prepare to journey into Thra when The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance arrives on Netflix on August 30.
