Pixar Announces Upcoming Movie Soul

Next year will be a big one for Pixar, as the studio has announced that its next original film is coming in 2020.

Entitled Soul, the animated pic will take audiences on an adventure across New York City and out into mystical cosmic realms in an effort to solve life's greatest mysteries.

The official Twitter account for Pixar Animation Studios dropped the news and confirmed that Soul will hit theaters exactly one year from today — on June 19, 2020. A summer 2020 release date puts Soul in cinemas three months after Pixar's next non-sequel venture, Onward, opens on March 6, 2020.

In a press release shared with Deadline, Pixar teased that Soul seeks to answer a question everyone has asked themselves at least once in their life: "Ever wonder where your passion, your dreams and your interests come from? What is it that makes you... you?" The outlet also indicated that Academy Award-winning filmmaker Pete Docter, who worked on Pixar's acclaimed films Up and Inside Out, is on board as the director of Soul. Dana Murray, who was nominated for an Oscar for her short film Lou, will produce.

Pixar didn't offer up any extra intel on Soul — like who the characters are, which actors will voice them, or what exactly the journey through the Big Apple and other alternate dimensions will entail — but the studio did provide the film's official logo, shown above.

Based on the information at hand, Soul seems like it could continue the trend Pixar started with Inside Out and explore the inner workings of its main character's psyche. Inside Out personified the five core emotions of 11-year-old Riley Anderson (voiced by Kaitlyn Dias) and took viewers inside her head to see how she reacted to moving towns, how she felt about starting school with a whole new group of classmates, how she formed memories, and how she coped with becoming a pre-teen. Perhaps Soul will do something similar by exploring the parts of a person that make them unique and human. Sounds pretty on-brand for Pixar, no?

Until more details on Soul surface, fans can mark their calendars for the film to arrive on June 19, 2020.
