Emma Mackey Details The Barbie Sleepover That Jumpstarted Greta Gerwig's Film

"Barbie," directed by Greta Gerwig, is easily one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year. Not only are fans excited to see the first live-action Barbie film, but they are also excited to see the exciting and expansive ensemble cast.

While Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling play the main Barbie and Ken, a long list of other big name actors play supporting characters, including other versions of Barbie and Ken. This list includes Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, Emerald Fennell, Will Ferrell, Ncuti Gatwa, Connor Swindells, Dua Lipa, and Hari Nef, amongst others. Additionally, there's "Sex Education" star Emma Mackey, who portrays a Barbie who is a physicist.

Naturally, fans are eager to hear what filming was like considering how notable the "Barbie" cast is. According to Mackey, the entire cast got to know each other through none other than a classic sleepover.

"Right in the beginning," Mackey told Empire Magazine, "we had a sleepover for the Barbies, which would involve playing games with Scott [Evans] and Ncuti [Gatwa]."

The sleepover matches the silly and fun vibe of the film according to Mackey

At the "Barbie" cast sleepover, Emma Mackey says the cast got competitive with one another during the games, which included table tennis.

"I don't play games usually because I get so competitive and angry," Mackey said, "but Scott and I were top of the game." While Mackey didn't go into many more details about what went on at the sleepover, she discussed what fans can expect of the film, and it definitely matches the vibe of a sleepover.

"'Barbie' is light and funny and silly and American and pink," Mackey said.

According to Mackey, Greta Gerwig is the perfect director to take on the funny and silly film. She also says that Gerwig brings a childish enthusiasm to her work.

"She's everything I could have dreamed of," Mackey said. "She's so invested and precise and so childishly delighted by what she's doing ... Her mind is fizzing all the time. I love being around those kinds of people."

"Barbie" will be released to theaters on July 21, 2023.
