Ocean's 8 Has Franchise Best $41.5 Million Opening

Ocean's 8 pulled quite the heist at the box office this weekend, earning the biggest opening yet for the Ocean's franchise with $41.5 million. The movie took first place over the rest of the weekend's new releases, which also included the horror film Hereditary and the star-studded thriller Hotel Artemis.

Ocean's 8 features Sandra Bullock as Debbie Ocean, the estranged sister of George Clooney's Danny Ocean from the original trilogy. Bullock's Ocean recruits a crew to pull off the heist of the century at the Met Gala. Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, and Awkwafina fill out the cast of the film.

The movie received mostly positive reviews from critics with a 67 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, and got a B+ CinemaScore. Its opening tops Ocean's Eleven's $38.1 million, Ocean's Twelve's $39.1 million, and Ocean's Thirteen's $36.1 million, when not adjusting for inflation. This weekend's well reviewed horror release Hereditary took fourth place with $13 million. The movie, which stars Toni Collette as a woman who starts to unravel her dark family history after her mother's death, was acclaimed by critics with a 93 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but its controversial ending put it in a bad spot with fans, who gave it a D+ CinemaScore. The film carries a $10 million budget.

Not doing so well was Hotel Artemis, which had a disappointing $3.1 million debut. The film stars Jodie Foster as a nurse who runs a hospital for criminals in a futuristic version of Los Angeles. Sterling K. Brown, Sofia Boutella, Jeff Goldblum, Charlie Day, Dave Bautista, Kenneth Choi, Brian Tyree Henry, Jenny Slate, and Zachary Quinto star in the film, which was written and directed by Iron Man 3's Drew Pearce. The film earned a 58 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a C- CinemaScore.
