Atlanta Renewed For Season 3
FX has Georgia on its mind. Specifically Atlanta, as in Donald Glover's acclaimed comedy-drama series Atlanta, which the network just renewed for a third season.
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that FX handed out a season 3 order to the show on Thursday, and relayed a statement issued by FX Networks and FX Productions programming president Nick Grad.
"Atlanta is phenomenal, achieving and exceeding what few television series have done," said Nick Grad, who announced the season 3 renewal of Atlanta alongside Eric Schrier, the president of original programming for FX Networks and FX Productions. "With Atlanta: Robbin' Season, Donald and his collaborators elevated the series to even greater heights, building on the enormous success of their award-winning first season. We're grateful to the producers and our extraordinary cast and crew for achieving this level of excellence, and we share the excitement with our audience about the third season knowing they will continue to take us to unexpected and thrilling places."
Top-lined by Donald Glover as the cynical but super-smart Earnest "Earn" Marks, Atlanta premiered its first season back in September of 2016. A second season, entitled Atlanta: Robbin' Season, debuted this March and aired its finale episode on May 10.
The series follows Glover's Earn and his cousin, the up-and-coming rapper Alfred "Paper Boi" Miles played by Brian Tyree Henry, as they work through the Atlanta music scene in hopes of bettering their own lives and the lives of their families. Atlanta also stars Get Out actor Lakeith Stanfield as Darius Epps, Alfred's confidant, right-hand man, and visionary, and Deadpool actress Zazie Beetz as Vanessa "Van" Keefer, Earn's on-again-off-again girlfriend and the mother of their young daughter, Lottie.
News of Atlanta's renewal is exciting but not surprising. The series has scooped up two Emmys, two Golden Globes, and a Peabody Award, so FX would be foolish not to keep it on air for as long as possible.
The third season of Atlanta is expected to debut sometime in 2019.
