Grey's Anatomy: Simone's Chemistry With Lucas Has Fans Worried About Her Wedding
Throughout its nineteen-season run, "Grey's Anatomy" has featured its share of "will they, won't they" slow-burn romances, and Season 19 presents yet another spin on this trope with Lucas Adams (Niko Terho) and Simone Griffin (Alexis Floyd). Along with fellow intern Mika Yasuda (Midori Francis), the two end up as roommates living in Meredith Grey's (Ellen Pompeo) old house, and there's a definite spark between them... but there's a problem. Simone is engaged to Trey (William Martinez), a resident from her original program, which she left after suffering from mental health problems.
Season 19 has seen Trey and Simone (well, mostly Trey) planning their upcoming wedding, and she even asked Lucas to be her Man of Honor, even though the two have kissed a few times and Lucas is very clearly dealing with lingering feelings for Simone. This entire situation has fans worried, and some took to Twitter to air their concerns. @natalie_patrice was clear on the matter: "Simone asking Lucas to be her man of honor. Oh that wedding definitely is not happening." @SimplySprina agreed, saying, "Did Simone just ask the man she's in love with to be her man of honor??? This wedding is going to be a mess!!"
Grey's Anatomy fans definitely feel like Simone and Lucas will get together
Not only do "Grey's Anatomy" fans think Simone's wedding probably won't happen because of her connection to Lucas, they're excited about it. "Simone asked Lucas to be her maid of honor and he accepted," @bonobochick wrote. "This is going to be soooo awkward but it's also going to lead to them spending a lot more time together. YES." Others think Simone is completely oblivious to how weird the entire situation is, as she seems to be totally overlooking Lucas's obvious feelings for her, like @tvgoldtweets: "the chemistry is obvious to everyone but simone."
@merreaa had a pretty strong take on the situation: "The way Lucas and Simone [look] at each other tells a whole story and you expect me to believe Simone getting married to trey like bffr." Ultimately, these fans know what show they're watching; "Grey's Anatomy" rarely hosts a wedding that goes according to plan. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) was late to her own nuptials because she was stuck in surgery. Meredith and Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) got married on a Post-It. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) and Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) got locked in an abandoned shed before their ceremony. Sorry, Simone. There's no way your big day will go well.
Simone and Lucas are a new version of an iconic Grey's Anatomy couple
There are only so many ways a show can pull off a slow-burn coupling, and as we pointed out, "Grey's" has been on the air for quite some time. With that in mind, Simone and Lucas are definitely reminiscent of another friends-to-lovers pairing on the series — specifically, Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) and April Kepner (Sarah Drew).
Jackson and April famously have a few trysts before she gets engaged to somebody else, and because this is "Grey's Anatomy," Jackson chooses the most dramatic moment to declare his love for April: in the middle of her wedding. The two then run away together, leaving their respective partners behind and getting married without telling anyone right away. They definitely have their ups and downs — they tragically lose a baby, April enlists as an army medic and leaves Jackson behind, they get divorced and then find out they're having a daughter — but Jackson and April are one of the most beloved couples on "Grey's," and based on Williams and Drew's last reappearance on the show, they did end up together. Simone and Lucas's journey will probably be just as dramatic, but maybe, like Jackson and April, they'll be happy when all is said and done.
Season 19 of "Grey's Anatomy" airs on Thursdays on ABC at 9 p.m. EST.
