Operation Finale Trailer Shows What It Takes To Catch A Nazi
Operation Finale is a go.
Catching Nazis is hard business, but someone's got to do it — especially when that Nazi is a notorious key architect of the party's most horrifying crimes. But as the trailer for Operation Finale so ably demonstrates, a loathsome villain can make for a very compelling movie.
The biggest draw here from the look of this trailer — aside from an excellent cast that includes Star Wars' Oscar Isaac, Inglourious Basterds' Mélanie Laurent, established G.O.A.T. Ben Kingsley, and left-field player Nick Kroll — is the "getting the team together" aspect of the movie's story. Isn't that always the most fun part of a heist plot? And this is a heist plot, after all, albeit an unorthodox one.
As the trailer breaks down, the story of Operation Finale revolves around the hunt for one of Adolf Hitler's most notorious lieutenants: Adolf Eichmann, who fled Germany during the fall of Hitler's Nazi regime to a hidden refuge in Argentina.
Eichmann, played here by Ben Kingsley, is credited with being one of the chief architects of Hitler's Final Solution, managing the mundane logistics of the Holocaust.
His eventual trial, in which he was convicted of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, was documented in a seminal journalistic work by Hannah Arendt called Eichmann in Jerusalem, in which Arendt coined the phrase "the banality of evil" to describe Eichmann's unassuming monstrosity.
Operation Finale is set to be out in theaters on September 14.
