How To Talk To Girls At Parties Trailer Throws A Concert That's Out Of This World

Grappling with aliens doesn't teach you how to talk to girls at parties, but it certainly doesn't hurt your chances of coming off as cool.

A24 has released the first trailer for How to Talk to Girls at Parties, a feature-length adaptation of a short story of the same name by Neil Gaiman. Check out the kinetic, somewhat confusing first look at the film up above.

The movie is directed by John Cameron Mitchell, who previously headed up the film adaptation of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. It's based on a story that was published in Gaiman's 2006 collection Fragile Things, and is being adapted for the screen by Mitchell and Philippa Goslett.

From the look of the trailer, How to Talk to Girls at Parties is all set to combine Gaiman's penchant for down to Earth characters mixed with casually surreal fantasy elements. There's also a beautiful amount of gross punk rock comedy, with finely detailed costumes and sets that you can almost smell already — not that you'd particularly want to.

The story focuses on a young shy man named Enn, who attends a raucous party where he cavorts and flirts with a group of girls who are secretly alien travelers. From the look of the trailer, it's more of an open secret than anything else.

How to Talk to Girls at Parties stars Elle Fanning, Alex Sharp, Ruth Wilson, and Matt Lucas. There's also Nicole Kidman, looking delightfully insane in the role of Queen Boadicea; Even without knowing exactly who the character is, we can confidently say that that's the most "Queen Boadicea"-looking costume we've ever seen.

From the outside looking in at least, it's a pretty great time to be Neil Gaiman, and it's not just due to this movie. The author is also showrunning an adaptation of his and Terry Pratchett's Good Omens for Amazon and the BBC, overseeing the second season of American Gods on Starz, and bringing Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast series to TV in collaboration with Akiva Goldsman.

How to Talk to Girls at Parties is expected to be released sometime later this year. Check out the trailer up above and the stylish poster for the movie down below.
