Tom Cruise High-Fived Emily Blunt After Her First Edge Of Tomorrow Set Injury
While the 2014 sci-fi time loop movie "Edge of Tomorrow" is easily one of the biggest movies of Emily Blunt's impressive career, at times it was anything but easy. During the filming process, the actress took a few hits, which impressed co-star Tom Cruise to the point of him offering her a bit of some good old-fashioned five-finger praise.
The film didn't have the best opening weekend but later managed to continue to rake in box office dollars. The film eventually posted a substantial return of over $370 million (via Box Office Mojo). The movie was a big hit with critics and fans, resulting in some remarkable scores on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as receiving the distinguished Certified Fresh designation. The "Starship Troopers" meets "Groundhog Day" premise of a soldier in a mech suit stuck in a time loop during a World War II-esque alien invasion was nothing short of an exhilarating, action-packed endeavor from start to finish.
There is no denying that the well-crafted feature offered up viewers a high-octane experience with its abundance of action sequences and battle scenes. In order to achieve the intensity of a war and bring the science fiction thriller to life, both Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt had to endure a heavy workload of combat and stunts. This, unfortunately, resulted in Blunt getting banged up on occasion. But thankfully, Cruise was there for some hands-on support.
Tom Cruise does things differently when it comes to certain issues on set
In "Edge of Tomorrow," Emily Blunt plays Sergeant Rita Vrataski, a sword-wielding hero adept at taking out aliens. While she may have made taking out her extraterrestrial enemies look simple on screen, it was no easy ordeal to pull off. One intriguing incident resulted in a tear-inducing moment that actually had a much bigger relevance than the actress could have known. "Basically, I tried to slash my sword through the air, and it got caught on one of the wires, and I ended up hitting myself in the face with the butt of it. My eyes were streaming tears," the actress told Entertainment Weekly. "But then Tom [Cruise] came into the makeup bus after it happened, and he was like, 'Yeah! First stunt injury!' He high-fived me as if it was my initiation. I was in the club."
Undoubtedly, Cruise knows the realm of stunt work pretty well, and that wasn't the only time he helped Blunt get through some of the rougher times on the set of "Edge of Tomorrow." On the "Smartless" podcast, Blunt revealed Cruise had a hilarious response to her nervously tearing up amid panic she couldn't get through the production. "He just stared at me for a long time, not knowing what to do, and he goes, 'Come on, stop being such a p—-, okay?'"
Cruise and Blunt were a solid team on "Edge of Tomorrow," and it's really a shame there are a number of reasons that a sequel will likely never happen.
