Pacific Rim Uprising Looks Even Bigger In The IMAX Trailer
John Boyega said Pacific Rim Uprising is "larger than life," and the new IMAX trailer hammers that point home.
IMAX unveiled a new look at the upcoming sequel to 2013's Pacific Rim which will see Boyega (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) step into the spotlight as the son of Idris Elba's character in the original. Although the trailer doesn't delve too far into plot specifics, it makes up for it with jaw-dropping action sequences and lots of oversized mayhem.
We get a look at a Jaeger with two swords, another with a laser whip, and one very massive kaiju. But it's also interesting to note that while the original movie (directed by Guillermo del Toro) was relatively dark in its visual tone, lots of the fighting in Steven S. DeKnight's Uprising seems to take place in broad daylight.
Boyega stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a guy who used to be a promising Jaeger pilot like his father. But Jake has walked away from his training and become tangled up in the criminal underworld. It's only when an unstoppable threat begins flattening cities that Jake decides to try and live up to his dad's legacy. He's joined by his estranged sister Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), who is the leader of a new generation of pilots who grew up beneath the specter of war; a gifted rival pilot named Lambert (Scott Eastwood); and a 15-year-old Jaeger hacker named Amara (Cailee Spaeny).
Pacific Rim: Uprising thunders into theaters on March 23.
