The Winchesters Fans' Hearts Are Melting Over This Destiel Parallel To Supernatural In Season 1 Episode 2

This article contains spoilers for Season 2, Episode 1 of "The Winchesters."

"Supernatural" helped usher in a new generation of paranormal fans with its imaginative fantasy storytelling combined with comedy and drama. But what helped set the series apart from other hit paranormal genre shows like "The X-Files" was its strong theme of the bonds of family and friendship. There was the dynamic between John, Sam, and Dean Winchester (Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Jared Padalecki, and Jensen Ackles), as well as the romantic partnerships Sam and Dean experienced throughout the show. Then there was Dean and the angel Castiel (Misha Collins), which forever became known as "Destiel" amongst fans.

Castiel's love for Dean became a fan-favorite storyline based on the friendship and chemistry the characters had. Once Castiel confessed his love for Dean before sacrificing himself to save the world and spare his friend, it became more prevalent that perhaps there was something deeper to their bond (per Entertainment Weekly).

The spin-off show "The Winchesters" is keeping that spirit alive by exploring the early years of John Winchester's (Drake Rodger) and Mary Campbell's (Meg Donnelly) relationship. There was even a Destiel parallel between the two in Season 1, Episode 2, that has fans' hearts melting.

Mary fixing John's coat is similar to when Dean adjusted Castiel's tie

In Season 1, Episode 2 of "The Winchesters," there is a scene where Mary adjusts John's coat before they go undercover in a counterculture commune (via Vulture). The moment is sweet and heartfelt and shows that the couple's bond is strong despite the scene's brevity. Longtime fans of "Supernatural" quickly pointed out that the moment is nearly identical to the time Dean adjusted Castiel's tie in Season 5 of "Supernatural." On Twitter, @AbnosomeAlyssa pointed out, "Did the official Winchesters account just retweet a Destiel parallel?" The user then shared the fan-assembled screenshots pointing out the two parallel's that were retweeted by @WinchestersOnCW.

More fans quickly added context to the similarities, with @giselleb1234 adding, "Mary fixing john's jacket reminded me of this [crying emoji] like mother like son #TheWinchesters." Although many fans adore the loving undertones of Castiel and Dean's friendship, Jensen Ackles doesn't feel the same way, as he revealed at a fan event at JaxCon 2017 (per Jessie Cristo). Then and there he declared, "Destiel doesn't exist."

Despite the various interpretations of the two friends, Mary adjusting John's coat is a perfect callback to the pairing Ackles and Collins created. In addition to numerous fans, "The Winchesters" official Twitter handle agrees.
