The 94th Academy Awards gave viewers many memorable moments, but Will Smith slapping Chris Rock on stage will go down in infamy. Upon winning Best Actor for “King Richard,” Smith apologized for his actions, but his tears didn’t win him any fans on Twitter.
Smith and Rock’s row took place after Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head. In his speech, Will Smith called his character, Richard Williams — father of tennis legends Serena and Venus — a “defender” of his family, and said that he himself had been called on by God to protect his family.
Smith apologized for his outburst, adding that “I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams. But love will make you do crazy things.” Despite Smith’s emotionally candid speech, Twitter was not in the mood to forgive, especially considering Smith’s mention of Williams.
User @samanthaafa tweeted, “Will Smith looks so dumb right now. And making his acceptance speech about his stupid actions is annoying. Richard Williams would have never.” @Lynette4900390 said, “Even if you don't like the joke, no one should be allowed to walk on stage and slap anyone without repercussion.”
