Why Ring of Powers'
Robert Aramayo
Calls Elrond The
Mutt Of The
Legendarium
By JARON PAK
As one of the most important characters in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium, Elrond’s half-mortal, half-immortal ancestry connects him to practically everyone and gives him an extremely unique perspective. As the actor who plays him in Amazon’s “The Rings of Power,” Robert Aramayo has dug deep into this complex background and what it means.
In a recent interview, Aramayo described Elrond’s family history, which includes humans, elves, and angel-like Maiar. "Technically, he's immortal, but to me, it suggests something interesting about what mortality means to him, and literally what mortality is inside of him,” he said. “'What does half-elven mean?' was one of the most interesting questions about creating him."
“He is the mutt of the legendarium,” Aramayo continued; “everything feeds into him, and it's why he was given the choice in the first place.” The choice referenced is that of either becoming mortal or immortal — with Elrond choosing the latter, but the fallout of the decision is something that we'll get to see in more adaptive detail as “The Rings of Power” plays out this fall.
