What Only Comics Fans Know About The Sandman's Johanna Constantine

THIS STORY CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR "The Sandman"

SPOILER WARNING!

Netflix’s adaption of “The Sandman” features an all-star cast portraying larger-than-life characters from the comic series. When Dream is captured and imprisoned for 100 years, his captors take his tools with one item, the Sand Pouch, making its way into the possession of a mysterious occult investigator named Johanna Constantine.
Morpheus eventually escapes his imprisonment and returns to London to retrieve the pouch, where he encounters Constantine in Chapter 3: “Dream a Little Dream of Me.” The story follows the comics closely, but it has introduced some significant changes — for instance, Johanna is entirely based on John Constantine from the “Hellblazer” series.
Netflix took a new approach with the character and had Jenna Coleman play the modern Constantine and her ancestor Lady Johanna featured in Chapter 6: “The Sound of Her Wings.” Both John and Johanna have similar origins, with Astra being sucked into a portal that seemingly leads to Hell, though Johanna seems a bit more put-together than John.
