The Reagan family dinners on “Blue Bloods” are an important time of bonding, and they run the gamut from less-than-stellar to deeply moving. However, fans agree that the family dinner scene in Season 5, Episode 21, “New Rules,” is a boring rehash of previous family dinners.
In this episode, Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) has arrested a gang leader who is suspected of murdering Deputy Chief Don Kent (Dennis Haysbert), but as there is no solid evidence to hold the suspect, Erin (Bridget Moynahan) is forced to let him go. The ensuing argument between the two siblings at the dinner table is something that happens several times in a season.
Fans feel like the scene is from an overused template, as the two characters fight and other family members pick sides, except for Frank, who merely butters a roll the whole time. For the 110th episode of the series, not to mention one so close to the season finale, the tension falls flat.
