The Subtle
Change Marvel
Made To Namor's
MCU Story
By SHANE O'NEILL
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” will see the long-awaited arrival of Namor the Sub-Mariner, played by Tenoch Huerta. However, this Namor won’t be the exact same as his counterpart in the comics, and there is at least one subtle but significant change for his MCU backstory.
In Marvel Comics, Namor is the ruler of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis — not unlike DC’s Aquaman. However, according to film composer Ludwig Göransson and a listing for the Marvel Legends Namor action figure, the MCU’s Namor will hail from Talocan instead of Atlantis.
There may be two main reasons why Marvel Studios has changed Namor’s home to Talocan. Firstly, they may want to avoid copying the Atlantis shown in the 2018 DCEU film “Aquaman,” and secondly, they want a locale name that is more consistent with the heavy Mesoamerican theme of the MCU’s Namor (Talocan might be inspired by the Aztec Tlālōcān).
