The Real Reason James Norton Left Grantchester

By BRANDON SHOAFF

Four seasons after Norton, who played Sidney Chambers, was replaced by fellow vicar William Davenport (Tom Brittney) fans are still feeling his absence. In the end, Norton’s decision to exit the show was really a creative decision.

In an interview with PBS, Norton stated he believed his character’s story was coming to a natural conclusion. He also felt that instead of starting a whole new journey for Sidney, the show would be better off bringing in a new character to “give ‘Grantchester’ a fresh injection of energy.”

Ultimately, the show has continued to thrive, holding an impressive 95% across all seasons on Rotten Tomatoes. Norton continues to work in film and television, and has recently starred in "Things Heard and Seen" and "Nowhere Special."
