As one of the most prolific television writers in the past 30 years, Eric Kripke will likely always be best known for creating “Supernatural.” Despite the show’s long lifetime, he only ever directed two of its episodes before he departed as showrunner after Season 5 — but they are both still well-regarded by fans.
One of the episodes Kripke directed was episode 20 of Season 2, titled “What Is and What Should Never Be.” It's an episode that explores the lingering pain Dean feels over his personal losses, so it makes sense that Kripke, who created the character, wanted to be the one to direct it.
The other episode Kripke directed was the Season 4 finale, titled “Lucifer Rising.” It lays a lot of the groundwork for what happens in Season 5, and since Kripke always planned on having the show's original apocalyptic storyline end in said season, it’s not hard to see why he would want to personally direct it.
