Murphy's Mind

With six seasons of “Peaky Blinders” under his belt and a movie in production, Cillian Murphy has become iconic for his role as Tommy Shelby, holding his own against the likes of Tom Hardy, Sam Neill, and Helen McCrory. In February 2022, he sat down with BBC Radio 1 to discuss his role as Tommy Shelby and recounted his favorite line in the series.
Murphy didn’t take very long to pick his favorite line, quoting, “All religion is a foolish answer to a foolish question.” This line feels like something that could be at the center of a college course on literature or theology, and its meaning can endlessly be unpacked.
Murphy also spoke about what makes Tommy Shelby so compelling, saying, "There was always this sort of memory of this happy, not damaged, accessible character [...] And then the First World War just destroyed him." With a "Peaky Blinders" movie on the way to cap off the series, fans will have more of the character and his violent gang to look forward to in the future.
