THIS STORY CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR "morbius."
Being a film about a bloodthirsty vampire hero, “Morbius” has plenty of scenes that go too far, but not in terms of gore — rather, the movie dives headfirst into common superhero flick pitfalls. The final vampire-on-vampire fight in “Morbius” has a serious problem with its special effects.
Jared Leto’s Morbius has super-speed, but what should be a fun superpower is only shown as colored smoke trails that flood the screen, making the hero impossible to follow in action sequences and muddling many scenes overall. His climactic fight with Matt Smith’s Milo cranks this unfortunate choice up to 11.
The final fight is a CGI-riddled mess, with Morbius and Milo trying to out-speed each other, giving the effect of two fireballs being thrown around. You can barely see what’s happening, especially because the characters look so similar, and the incomprehensible action ruins the drama of the film’s finale.
“Morbius” is an example of how smashing two action figures together amongst an overload of special effects does not make for an amazing fight. Here’s hoping that they lay off the CGI in future Morbius appearances — after all, he may have super-speed, but viewers can only keep up at a human’s pace.
